It is true, this movie is horrible
16 December 2006
I read many reviews on this site and just couldn't believe the movie would be really THAT bad...well it is. True, I dislike Mike Myers in all his movies, but in this one he really is intolerably not-funny.

One reviewer, ralphies, on this site wrote: "His voice/accent is terrible and he laughs at his own jokes with an awful weasing sound, which is about the only laughing I heard at the theater" I have to agree, I honestly didn't laugh a single time. (It actually would be funny if the characters in this movie didn't like the jokes and couldn't stand the annoying cat: there isn't anything funnier than someone who tries to but fails to be funny, just watch David Brent in the fabulous BBC series "The Office")

The movie looks good though, the overall design is gorgeous. It is fast paced, good camera work...they really put a lot of effort and love in this movie. Unfortunately it is not enough to save the movie...the jokes and especially Mike Myers who delivers them are just too horrible.

poor acting by Kinski
21 August 2006
I really liked this movie, the intense claustrophobic atmosphere, at the edge of insanity, the pacing which is slow, the lack of straight action.

But what spoils it is Klaus Kinski's acting. The guy does nothing, he just maintains his mad, suspicious look on his face He isn't slowly loosing his mind, he's "troubled" from the beginning till the end of the movie, there's no development at all. Kinski's performance is purely one dimensional - all he ever does is give us an intense stare, which looks rather ridiculous after 10 minutes already.

I don't even think he was acting at all, we are just witnessing a man with contempt and suspicion for the people (actors, cameramen) around him.

Physically he doesn't have the weight to be feared by the characters in this movie, he leans constantly, the armor obviously is too heavy for him. But that's a minor issue, what his performance really makes poor is the lack of development in his character as I already mentioned. There's no way you can identify with his character, because he doesn't give you anything other than a mad suspicious look, he isn't human. I guess many will find his performance intense, I found it laughable at best. You look at him once and think "what's with him" and then try to ignore him if you can...the camera won't let you however.

understated, calm and brilliant
12 November 2004
Excellent movie. Excellent actors. I like the calm flow of the movie. Dialogs are strong: very realistic, not cultivated in a predictable and

understandable main stream drama form. The hostage scene is brilliant. In many movies the characters

react in a movie-like way, shaped in how the characters would

react if...too cultivated, mostly showcases for actors to show how

emotional and brilliant they can play their roles. In this movie the characters many times don't know what to say or

how to react and that's brilliant in my opinion. In real life you don't have strong and powerful one-liners at hand. But still it is a movie and put into a form, a calm and understated,

but brilliant form.
