Futei no kisetsu (2000)
Sexy Subject, Boring Movie.
When I read a synopsis of this film, I was led to believe it was a comedy, a farce at that. This movie is not. The only thing going for this movie was its brevity. I had no interest in paying attention for the last half of the movie as the characters were unsympathetic and the plot was lacking. I'll admit, I was lured in by the subject matter, but, in the end, I was let down to an extent that I am glad I got it from Netflix so I could send it back as soon as possible. I had hoped to laugh, but instead I checked my email. If you want to watch a comedy, THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO GO. Oh, and also, apparently I need to keep writing to finish out the review, so I'll just reiterate. IT WAS BORING.
Main Hoon Na (2004)
Wow!
A true masala film. Farah Khan's directorial debut was a wonderful romp - it embraces both east and west styles. She uses Matrix-like computer-graphics as well as references to classic Bollywood films like 'Sholay', and '1942: A Love Story'. The dance sequence are what you expect from Farah; beautifully executed and inspired. The story is comical, dramatic, and action-packed at times, causing some to find the film a little patched-together. On the other hand, for those who enjoy a good Masala film, this is it. The music is wonderful, and ShahRukh shines amongst a fabulous cast including new comer Amrita Rao and beauty Sushmita Sen.
Tim (1979)
I don't blame Mel.
Here's my problem. The film is fine. The plot is fine. Mel's character, the title, Tim, doesn't make sense (in the movie, at least). Tim is *supposed* to be mentally handicapped. This is not expressed in anyway. He just seems to be a polite, if naive, young man. Every trick and character-flaw they use in the film to make us believe he is handicapped can easily be explained away without the viewer being convinced, (ie, he does not understand death, mainly because no one explains it to him). It is for this reason, I adore the film. Plus, Mel is adorably young. On the whole, a great film to laugh at with friends. Not so good if taken seriously.
