Buddy Games (2019)
All downhill after the opening scene
I was freaking out when I saw James Roday and Jensen Ackles in the funeral scene. I also like Josh Duhamel, so I was excited, but my high hopes were dashed pretty quickly. It all went downhill FAST after a strong opener.
Really, the only reason I gave it three stars instead of one was because of Roday's little inserts with his "Ok, Byeeee!" even after he's beaten up every time. Ackles was also funny, but didn't have much to play off of, and was barely in it, so...
MAN, was that a waste of an incredible cast.
I suppose if you're high it may be funny? Or maybe it would be a huge buzzkill. I dunno.
Soupçons (2004)
Not buying it.
Paterson tries to ride the wave of sympathy for unjustly convicted persons. Sorry, dude - even with this extremely biased, one-sided perspective your crocodile tears and tales of victimization are not convincing. I mean - you independently enlisted the film company! That's insane bias!
I wasn't going to finish watching the series because *insert eye roll*, but I felt I needed all of the information if I was going to voice an opinion.
The amount of egocentricity is astounding, so I suppose the "documentary" has that going for it. It's like a car wreck you can't turn away from... well, maybe a fender bender?
I love true crime - the evidence-based ones finding the criminals, the exonerating of innocent convicts, and anything in between. I also have a high standard for integrity (no matter which side), and Peterson's manipulative tactics fall severely short of that bar.
Cobra Kai (2018)
*yawn*
At first (regarding the first two seasons) I was enjoying the nostalgic humour. The amount of idiotic choices by both teenagers and adults was getting pretty old, but I was hoping the third season would bring just a little bit of logic... nope. They totally doubled down on the stupid, escalating illegally dangerous and psychotic storylines. And the humour is AWOL.
Saved by the Bell (2020)
Totally surpasses expectations
It's funny - if you look at all of the episode ratings, they're super high, but as I'm writing this, the show rating is at a 5.2... huh?! So I figure people with no sense of humour watched the first 10 minutes of the pilot and thought the cheesiness was serious. It's totally not... it's making fun of itself and the bubble the original characters were in. I'm really quite impressed with the balance of humour and "real" topics. I'm totally loving it.
Now I'm just sad I have to wait for a second season. 😫
Vikings: The Ice Maiden (2020)
Stunningly inspirational
I read some other reviews, and people seem to either agree with me, or think the funeral was drawn out, but the funerals for the warriors were always more lustrous the more powerful the warrior.
Lagertha was inspirational for a race of women that were actually allowed to stand up to their husbands - a unique trait for the time.
Even in these days, Lagertha's character was powerful. Not only was she brilliant in her ferociousness, but even more that she was also kind, generous, loyal, unwavering in her principles... She was an example of a strong woman that stood steadfast, yet embraced her femininity.
I found her funeral episode beautiful, touching, inspiring, and perfectly fitting for one who touched so many lives.
Thank you for this, Michael Hirst.
