We took our HS youth group to see GND2 on April 9th. Overall, the movie was fairly well done and interesting. We gathered after, laughing when the theater crew came in to clean, saying they must have been thinking "well, there's the youth group". Our HS youth liked this one more than the first, they said they found it easier to connect to, perhaps because they are all in high school.
The story of a teacher questioned about her methods hit home for me as I went through the process to get my teaching certification before deciding it was not the path for me. There are plenty of things this story line could have addressed without using Jesus and it still would have made sense. Since this is a Christian based company that puts these movies out though, and considering this is a sequel, it's no surprise what they chose to go with.
I was pleased to see the returning characters and how they worked with the new story line. Since we stayed to discuss after the movie was over, we were probably some of the few that saw the after credits scene which we're pretty sure will lead to GND3.
There were things we questioned however. At the beginning, when Grace addressed the student's question that got her in trouble, we see a boy pull out his phone and text someone. It is never revealed who he texted or what was said, and this boy is never seen again. I would have thought that he would have played a bigger role since ultimately he was the one to get Grace in trouble. Another thing that I found rather confusing was why the writers chose to make the ACLU the "villain" of the film. From what I know of the ACLU, they actually would have been the first to defend Grace...not the other way around.
My favorite part of the film was the testimonies that talked about Jesus as a historical figure rather than a religious one. Even as a Christian, I rarely hear about the historical facts surrounding Jesus.
