My Mister (2018)
10/10
A perfect story
29 May 2024
My Mister is the equivalent of a perfect movie, but in k-drama format.

One of the biggest issues with most k-dramas (or tv-series for that matter) is that main characters are always taking dumb decisions for no good reason, making the plots unbelievable.

My Mister is a great example of character development and good story writing. Each character, main and secondaries, are giving enough screen time and progression across the episodes. By the end of the drama, you end up with a deep comprehension of each character motivations, struggles, learnings, wins, failures.

All of these features is what makes our life the way it is; and My Mister does an excellent job is displaying that in the most realistic way, while still adding a touch of imagination that inspire us.

I wanted to thank to everyone involved in the creation of this drama. You all put so much effort into making a story that connects with our root emotions.

Probably the most exciting sci-fi story of recent years
28 March 2024
I have no idea this story was based on a trilogy of books until I started watching it.

This show was stunning. The events are displayed with proper emotion and impact, and some of the scenes are likely going to become cinematographic icons in the upcoming years.

The ideas are really original and the world building is top notch.

The acting was pretty good with perhaps the exception of two characters, which felt a little bland in a couple of scenes.

The scenes that happened in the past felt very real and acting was really top notch there.

I can't not wait for season two to see how the end of the story unfolds!

The Creator (2023)

Outstanding sci-fi that stand by its own
29 September 2023
The truth is, this movie is powerful.

Amazing performances by Madeleine, JD Washington, and all supporting cast. They all make this movie a wonderful experience that carries a lot of emotion in a credible future setting.

As per usual, critics are drawing comparisons, without giving enough credit to the great originality of this movie.

This movie deserved much more marketing attention, but I am glad that it was not the case because I came to the theater without any expectation and I left the theater wanting to see more.

There are great memorable scenes in a world that feels authentic and somehow different.

Huge congrats to Gareth Edwards and team, the film deserves a big round of applause.

Completely underrated. THIS FILM IS LOVELY!
17 September 2023
This movie has managed to accomplish a mix of humour, romance, and adventure in a sci-fi plot, all in a great balance!

This is a film that communicates a positive way of thinking under very bad circumstances, and uses the vehicle of humour for that, which is great.

The monsters designs, the funny circumstances, and the acting is all top-notch (as well as the great VFX). The story is also very unique, with many clever and unexpected situations.

Its annoying to see that people always rate low movies that include humour. This seriously needs to stop, movies like this are a fun to watch with family, they bring joy.

The creators/writers of this movie knew exactly what they wanted, and the outcome is marvelous. I can't wait to see more from them.

Once again, a sci-fi movie is underrated just because it does not fit the status-quo of science fiction stories of the time.

Time proved this movie is a classic
12 August 2023
Ironically, I think people needed time to appreciate this masterpiece of a film.

This films is a marvel because it seriously makes you wonder you think about your life-time, and how important little moments are.

Its fascinating to see the dynamics between people in a world were you can't get physically old, but your mind does.

More than 10 years of its release, and everytime you see this movie, you can pick new subtle details.

Another aspect of this movie is that you remember it. The whole plot is so distinct with several remarkable scenes.

Anyways, a movie that was misunderstood on its time, but hopefully will get more appreciation in time.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
7/10
We all love Nolan's films, but this wasn't his best
22 July 2023
As a fan of Nolan's films, it is really hard to criticize his work because so many of his previous works are honestly quite amazing.

So here we go...

The first thing is that the acting in Oppenheimer is great, and Cillian, Robert, and the cast deserve all the best. They all carried this story on their shoulders and it is the main highlight of it.

Secondly, the sound was also great. Amazing job of creating a mood and vibe for many sequences in the movie.

BUT.

Unfortunately, the storytelling of this movie suffers from the same symptoms of Tenet: it misses so many opportunities to make a real impact on the viewers. It feels disconnected.

Overall the movie felt like a sequence of fast segments with little continuity that makes it hard to focus on the important parts, and it is also hard to deeply connect with the emotions of the characters or the intensity of the moment.

If everything is intense, then there are no high stakes, and the overall feeling is well, tiresome.

I thought initially that the lack of CGI sounded like a great idea, but it turned out to be not a great choice. There is a big moment in this movie that felt very small because it was obvious that they were using practical effects, and they weren't able to represent the proper scale of it.

There are also so many moments in this film that could have benefited from visuals, and instead, there was just dialogue and more dialogue.

There was a lot of hype about watching this movie on Imax and in big theaters.

But what's the point of creating hype around the idea of going to the theater to see the movie, if you aren't delivering visuals that can take advantage of the large format?

Finally, there was the idea of using non-linear storytelling. This was also something that sounded amazing before watching the movie, but unfortunately due to all the previous issues, it was not a good tool to help the narrative, it only created more confusion.

So yeah... Oppenheimer, unfortunately, was not able to match the expectations generated during the marketing campaign of the movie.

It was a really cool take, but it feels like there was too much focus on telling the story in a cool way, that something was lost in the way.

The Last of Us (2023– )

First episode was amazing, looking forward to next one
16 January 2023
I will be updating this review after each new episode.

I have never played the game, so I don't have any preconceptions about the story.

This first episode was amazing. I loved how it started from the beginning of things, developing the main lead character while still leaving many unanswered questions about the whole situation.

The cinematography is beautiful, and so are the visual effects. I would pay to see this on a big screen.

The general mood and lighting are so well executed!

The acting of every actor was pretty stunning as well.

I must say that this episode has managed to build up the tension so well that my heart almost stopped a couple of times.

I have so many questions, but I imagine these will be answered in the upcoming episodes.

Looking forward to seeing all the upcoming episodes.

A sequel that levels up the story!
13 January 2023
Please don't trust the low rating, it's just nonsense.

This movie is an incredibly satisfying film that builds up the world that was set up in the first film.

The suspense is higher, the action is better, and we also get to see a new character development that was unexpected.

The children are now growing and learning, and part of that process implies grief and moving forward. The acting skills of everyone in this film are just top-notch.

The best of all is that after finishing this film, you get to wonder how will the final film be (which hopefully there will be).

I would love to see a third party (to complete the trilogy) that considers the point of view of the country-level response to the events from day 1, and how come they haven't shown up yet.

Sunshine (2007)
10/10
Extremely underrated. Sunshine is a sci-fi masterpiece!
7 January 2023
Critics from 2007 couldn't really understand this film et all. 16 years later, this masterpiece has proven that it beat the test of time.

Sunshine is so brilliantly executed that no other film after it has ever managed to do something similar. Every single sci-fi movie that came after was literally inspired by it. You can see pieces of it on Star Trek (2009), and Interstellar (2014).

First, this is the most beautiful representation of the sun itself in cinema. The VFX and cinematography in this movie are just like real-life space photography, it is just beautiful.

The acting from Cillian was superb, with lots of subtleties. Michelle, Cliff, Benedict, Rose, and the rest of the cast did an excellent job.

The storytelling was really original as well. The way the third act is presented has been criticized a lot, but actually, there were many clues left in the 1st and 2nd acts that perfectly explain everything that happened in the last part of the movie. Closing with one of the best -if not the best- endings in any sci-fi movie ever.

There are so scenes that you will remember forever because of how unique they are. A visual tribute to space makes you feel in awe about the immensity of our universe.

In general, a masterpiece of sci-fi that was not understood et all by the 2007 generation, but that has stood the test of time as a classic sci-fi film.

A film that will touch your heart
3 January 2023
Set in a small rural village, we get immersed in the story of a young math genius that wants to build a train station.

This movie is a mix of romcom, drama, and slice-of-life genres, combined in a harmonious way.

This movie is heartwarming and beautiful. The story has so much depth that it feels like it makes you feel what the characters feel.

As someone who grew up in a small village, I can relate so much to this movie. Daily transportation can take a big chunk of your life when you live in rural areas with little to no public transportation.

The acting is perfect, all main and supporting actors did a great job on conveying their roles.

The main leads have beautiful chemistry too, with many hilarious moments!

In conclusion, a classic!

Several times better than the original
2 January 2023
A much more emotional, thrilling, and development story makes this series one of the most memorable shows in the political genre.

While the original is full of filler content, this one is perfectly crafted, and nothing is added unnecessarily.

The acting is top-notch, and the script while not perfect, has the right turns, and great arcs. You might think you figured everything out by the end, but there is a surprise, something you didn't expect.

Jin-hee Ji made of the best depictions of a president ever created. His micro expressions are always on spot. The cast for the staff and support roles was also superb, with great character development for each of them.

The cinematography was superior to the original in all possible ways.

This makes every episode exciting, it keeps you wondering how things will unfold.

Korean drama has once again proven that you can have both great acting and great stories in a tv format.

There is a big focus on ethics and moral values with great catchphrases and morals.

This tv series makes you think that we can really have a better world if are good people.

You will want to rewatch it, several times
28 December 2022
The thing with Avatar: The Way of Water is that you keep coming to it, many times.

You will enjoy the rewatch, you will get marble at the surrealism, you will start repeating phrases, you will start thinking more deeply about the secondary messages, about our connection with nature...

There is just so many iconic scenes!

At some point, you realize that even though the overall story is simple (and even with some plot holes), the emotions you feel while watching it are real and intense.

Very few movies manage to do that.

The acting done by the new cast is great, the kids did a great job Lang is awesome as usual, and Seldaña and Worthington nailed their roles are parents.

So yeah, Cameron has done it again.

Beautiful Story, Beautiful Animation. Classic Rom-Com
2 October 2022
This movie gives you the Spiderman Into the Spider-verse vibes into a romantic story with lots hilarious moments.

The story itself feels so real because the characters are down to earth and the situations are just like in real life, with ups and downs.

The conversations between friends bring a lot of joy and help to build up the love story of the main characters.

Eveything just fits right in terms of storytelling. There is great character development, and life-like drama, mixed with memorable comedic situations.

The animation and cinematography help a lot to convey a color style that gets you immersive even more in the story.

Life can be an entergalactic experience!

The Sandman (2022– )
10/10
Perfectly executed story and a visual marble
6 August 2022
Short summary: Ignore the trolls giving low-rating. This series is amazing.

Every chapter of The Sandman feels like a dream, and that is the beauty of it.

The cast is amazing, and Tom Sturridge takes his performant to a new level with his portrayal of the Dream Lord. All the little nuances in his expressions, his voice, and his timing really fit perfectly with his character.

It is clear that Neil Gaiman got involved in this project, and I am thankful that he did because the end result is smart, perfectly paced storytelling with stunning visuals.

The cinematography is awesome too. Some scenes set in the realms look like paintings. The amount of detail on the visual effects is stunning, everything is top-notch. I don't think many people can understand the amount of effort that this required. Every chapter could easily be considered an independent movie.

I appreciated the detailed effort they did in giving time to the main character to develop across each new chapter.

Underwater (2020)
8/10
Ignore the low rating, this movie is a gem!
4 August 2022
People here comparing this movie to Alien and saying that it is not original, are missing the point. This movie does not tries to compete with Alien in any way.

This movie is a visual marvel with an original way of storytelling. If any comparison has to be made, this movie is closer to Cloverfield (2008), which was also fundamentally underrated when it was first released.

In Underwater, there is no a linear storytelling, instead the story happens in realtime. The events came as a surprise, and so it is the experience of them. This concept is actually fascinating! The back of the history is explained across different hints through the movie (without flashbacks). By watching this movie for a second time, new hints are discovered, which is very gratifying.

The acting is top notch. Kristen does an amazing job delivering the difficulties and struggles that her character needs to overcome.

The acting work from all the cast is stunning as well, there are really beautiful memorable acting moments in this movie.

For these saying that there is no character development, this is not true either. Both Kristen and Henwick's character went through some pretty cool character developments focused on survival.

I really loved the contributions of each of the supporting roles.

The cinematography is beautiful, many scenes in this movie are visually unique and stay on your memory. This is the first time we seem action in underwater scene in such a visually appealing way.

This movie has been fundamentally misunderstood by most people.

Austin gave his all and it paid off!
31 July 2022
While the general storytelling feels a bit overwhelming, Austin's performance makes this movie a classic.

I think this is one of these movies that people rewatch several times not because of the story, but because of the emotions that conveys.

There are many moments in this movie that makes you feel the greatness of Elvis through his songs in a way that was never achieve before.

I would love to see a longer version of this movie with less commentary from Colonel Parker, and more character development on Elvys itself.

Hats off to Austin!

Make sure you check his practice videos on YouTube!

Joyful and touching story that makes you feel good
30 July 2022
Very good storytelling accompanied with a lot of funny situations make this movie a classic for family time.

The messages transmitted here are warm and memorable.

Angourie Rice acting is very enjoyable, she is able to deliver an amazing variety of emotions sometimes with just subtle face expressions. She and Gaten have some great chemistry scenes.

The storytelling is excellent!

The low rating is nonsense, The Black Phone is a gem!
15 July 2022
Most of low-rating reviews here seems to be focused on a debate about if this movie's genre is horror or not, completely missing the point of the film.

This movie doesn't not care about following standards of what an horror movie it is supposed to be like, it just delivers a great history in a very fresh and unique way.

Acting from Mason, Madelin, and Ethan are just top notch. The feeling that is conveyed is extremely real and makes you engage with it the whole time.

Also, the decisions that the characters take (both children, and adults) are very reasonable and logical for their ages and personalities. There are several details across the story that explains the behaviors of each character and their experiences or struggles.

Cinematography is amusing, with perfect color grading that matches the 70s, plus great memorable scenes to remember for years to come.

Definitely a much watch!
