Spy Kids: Armageddon (2023)
Engendering principles of non-violence and fair play
It's refreshing to see alternatives to violence and dog eat dog principles in a movie. I recommend this movie for classroom discussion on non-violence and fair play rather than winner takes all philosophical mannerisms. Many children movie's advocate typical machismo and lets oppress the weaker ones. American filmmaker, Robert Rodriguez has turned himself around after making early films like Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and Machete. Rodriguez was born in San Antonio, Texas.
While attending St. Anthony High School Seminary in San Antonio, Rodriguez was commissioned to videotape the school's football games. According to his sister, he was fired soon afterward as he had shot footage in a cinematic style, getting shots of parents' reactions and the ball traveling through the air instead of shooting the whole play.
Beyond Borders (2003)
In my humble opinion this has to be Angelina Jolie's best picture ever.
I can't believe that this film did not make it in the box office, it cost 35 million to make and only grossed 4.5 million. In my humble opinion this has to be Angelina Jolie's best picture ever. The credits in the end sums it up well: "This film is dedicated to all relief workers and the millions of people who are victims of war and persecution. They continue to inspire us all with their courage and will to survive."
In one of the emotional revetting scenes she is giving a speech to her peers of UN workers and organizations breaking down while see is recollecting the plight of refugees and the futility of the work being done on their behave.
Interestingly, Angelina Jolie did volunteer work for the same United Nations organization her character plays in the film. She was ultimately named a UN goodwill ambassador and in 2003 published some journals she wrote of her experiences, titled "Notes from My Travels", to raise funds for refugee relief.
Paradise (1991)
Definitely worth seeing, very touching and heartfelt.
This movie was very touching, bringing up past memories from the viewer with an innocent and heartfelt storyline. The ten year old Willard Young, played by Elijah Wood, similar to his role as Frodo Baggins of Lord of the Rings becomes the protagonist of the movie. His unconditional love and affection to the surrounding cast leave a trail of transformational outcomes beyond rigidity and indifference to life. At the same time the viewer has the opportunity to relive their childhood experiences and reflect on what is valuable. Each of the characters learn to confront their biggest fears: loss, feeling of being unloved, inadequacy, and brokenness.
