The Woodsman (2004)
An excellent movie
After twelve years in prison, Walter (a convicted sex offender) returns to his home town. He struggles to find an apartment and has to move into a small apartment across the street from an elementary school. He finds a job working at a lumberyard. A quiet and guarded man he finds unexpected solace from a female co worker called Vickie who promises that she won't judge him for his history. He starts to see a man (he calls him Candy) watching the school kids come and go from school and believes that he is also a paedophile.
Unfortunately for Walter he can't escape his past he is shunned by his own family and only his brother in-law will have anything to do with him. He feels that no one will trust him and is constantly hounded by a suspicious local police officer (Detective Lucas). It soon gets too much for him and after following and befriending a young girl in a neighbourhood park he starts to doubt his control over his demons. An outstanding and disturbing movie although I did see it going in a different direction regarding Candy and the ending. I thought it could have been one of two things.
SPOILERS BELOW
1. That Candy wasn't real and was an invention by Walter, in reality Walter himself was stalking the children. This after a while couldn't be true as detective Lucas told Walter he was watching him and he new when Walter missed his stop.
2. Again Candy was an invention by Walter and we were simply being shown Walter decent into madness (isolation from friends and family and consistent pressure from Lucas) and it would leave to his eventual suicide.
Obvoiusly if you have seen this you will know how it all ended.
Ricochet (1991)
Ricochet
Drama starring Denzel Washington and John Lithgow. Nick Styles (Washington) is a rookie cop who captures the quite sadistic Earl Blake (Lithgow) in an unusual fashion. The publicity surrounding the arrest gets Styles and his partner promoted to deceive and within 2 years he becomes deputy DA. Blake however rots in jail attacking everyone and anything that gets in his way thinking about getting revenge on Styles. He soon escapes after some silly fighting in the prison (samurai style sword fights in what looks like the canteen, with books strapped to each other as protection) and sets up Styles in a true Hollywood way. Washington was the highlight of the film although Lithgow was truly over the top Hollywood bad guy.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The best Zombie movie ever
In my opinion Dawn of the dead is the best Zombie movie ever made and if you check out my profile you can see its my favourite movie of all time. Set mainly in a mall it tells the story of 4 people (two members of a news team and two members of a S.W.A.T outfit) who have escaped from the plague of the zombies. They clear the mall of zombies and make home there becoming comfortable and conceited until a gang on bikers arrive. Although I thought that the make up could have been much better (see day of the dead for excellent zombie make up) I found it an excellent and gory film. Although you do need to find the right length cut, in the UK we have a 120 min cut with most of the gore cut out (such as the zombie kids in the airport) and the 127 min cut with most of these cuts returned.
Drive (1997)
I can't say anything bad about this film
I thought that this movie was excellent, I watched it after a recommendation from a friend.
After a slow first ten minutes when we get introduced to the main characters Toby Wong (an excellent Mark Dacascos)and Malik Brody (equally as good Kadeem Hardison) the action gets under way and doesn't stop until the closing credits.
The jokes come quick and fast throughout and the film only gets better with the introduction of the fantastic but pretty unstable motel worker Deliverance Bodine (Brittany Murphy).
Overall I give it 8/10
