The Devil's Carnival (2012)
Bousman and Zdunich's Alternate Universe
Anyone who has seen Darren and Terrance's previous project "Repo The Genetic Opera" knew what to expect from The Devil's Carnival, and you really can't tell me otherwise. Like "Repo", TDC contained interesting and unique visuals, a bizarre storyline, and catchy yet strange and interesting music.
When the film began, my expectations were not much higher than something repo-esque that I could just enjoy. But within maybe two minutes, I was almost peeing my skirt about how much I loved the film.
** Here there be spoilers ** It was the little details that got me. The way that all three of the main characters met their deaths surrounded by mirrored dialog, the way that each of their trips through hell was based on a fable, and the little details from earlier in the film that were brought back later. Not everything makes sense in the movie (for example, I don't really understand TDC's version of "Heaven", but according to the Q&A, more of that will be explained in the next installment of these films. ** No more spoilers **
For the TDC road tour in New York City, I was working the street team and got to attend both the showings for free, so I got to sit in on two different Q&A's, and get even more perspective from the extra questions. One thing that really struck me was Bousman's response to one of the questions. I can't actually remember what the question was, but he went into an answer about how with both Repo and the Carnival, he wanted to create an entire world that the viewer gets immersed in. No matter how strange or unreal the events of the film are, it's a complete experience of an alternate reality, and it makes the movie so much more memorable. The Devil's Carnival really does accomplish this creating of a Universe, and when it ends, you want more.
The 8/10 is due to my wish that the movie was longer, and the fact that I think the music could be improved upon slightly (though I still can't stop listening to the soundtrack!!)
