A movie that depicts the political position of its creators, which I guess is more or less the position of the audience as well. That war is useless. In particular, the movie highlights the impact of the Cold War in the 1980s, and the possibility that World War III will trigger a nuclear war. The movie also reveals how paranoid US citizens are about nuclear war, as well as the inner desire for the world to remain safe and peaceful.
The acting is also satisfying. I think this is the first movie I saw with young Matthew Broderick. He looks cute, innocent, naive, and idealistic as David. He creates a charming chemistry with Jennifer (Ally Sheedy).
What is disturbing and somewhat unbelievable is the quick turnaround of Falken's (John Wood) decision to intervene in saving the world from the threat of nuclear war, from his previous cynical and bitter attitude towards humanity.
It's true, sometimes we don't need to win when the other side loses, but often the only 'win' is to not play at all. An analogy that resonates with life.
