Antebellum (2020)
I want to give this movie more stars...
But I can't. The performances were great, but the story was... What was this story? Was this movie about slavery, or an underground kidnapping ring? Why was a cellphone the only way out? If this was a civil war reenactment camp, then are the soldiers actually killing each other for the spectators? If not, then why did they need real slaves? Was it for the free labor? Was a town cover up the reason why nobody seemed to know that this camp had spectators? Didn't those spectators have cell phones?
So many questions after watching this. Too many, really. This movie gave me a headache. This movie seems to get lost in a deep metaphor. That metaphor swallowed the logic in this movie. Wish I could give it more stars, but sadly, I cannot.
Mope (2019)
Nope
This movie desperately needed a narrator. It was basically a dramatized true crime story, missing its most important part.
I wasn't there, but from what I saw, I didn't believe the story. It portrays everyone involved with some type of lack of common sense. Everyone looked self destructive, or negligent on some level. The main character, with a major lack of awareness. His friend, with his major lack of attention. The lead, with his lack of humanity. The main charater's parents with their lack of parenting. All of these things piling up together until the end was finally reached.
Spoiler Alert: The main character's friend vents to the main character in possibly the worst way I've ever seen... Then afterwards, giving a half hearted appology, adding to the seeming mayhem that was clearly coming, that everyone seemed to conveniently ignore. It all seemed like it was supposed to happen the way that it did. At the conclusion, I wasn't sure what this story was trying to say.
To add to my confusion, at the end of this movie, they advertised the movie these guys were in (Won't be posting the title here). Find that movie on the internet, and it has their names on it. And what happened to them. Maybe this was really just some messed up 2 hour commercial. Messed up world we live in. Wouldn't surprise me.
Bottom Line: I did not like this movie. I did not believe the story, particularly the friendship between these two characters. I think this movie would have been better as a true crime story. For me, this is a one star.
Vivarium (2019)
Was this a horror movie?
It seemed more like a humanity check. Two characters stuck in a reality they did not want to be in, away from their lives. Trapped with a kid who turns out to be somewhat of a creature. They turn their frustrations onto the kid. The kid stays pretty much who is is until the end. They get violent, the kid waits them out. By the time this movie ends, I wasn't sure if I was with them or the kid was the protagonist of this movie. Maybe this was a slice of life horror film. Not really clear on what this film's objective was, unless it was to point out the futility of life. I'd give it a 10 if the movie was clear. Sadly it never reached that level of clarity.
