Significant - Jesus and Mary scene, The scene in the abandoned Inn
27 June 2005
- SPOILERS ahead - This is not just an action flick for narrow minded couch potatoes. Regarding the "Jesus and Mary scene" I think Mars is extremely tormented soul, fighting his inner demons, carrying all the sins that modern America produces in its so called democracy. Young, sad and mad, Mars is a typical nerve-breaking psycho, about to go completely berserk... you just feel his pain, his searching for something meaningful in his life...I think he just finds it in last hours of his life with Jennifer (in his twisted way. He's also saying "you're my girl!!) and finally in Jennifer's eyes, the moment before he torches himself. Don't forget, he also said to Jen, that this is the best day of his life. Don't forget also that the director is not an American. I think through Mars he is expressing his disapproval with nowadays' world politics and where this is leading to. Besides the impressive "Jesus & Mary scene", or called it what you want - There is another, IMHO, significant scene. In the abandoned Inn where Talley with the bookkeeper Smith is confronting the villains. In one moment, when situation is escalating, Smith commands the lead villain to kill Talley and in another moment, Smith actually kills the lead villain for not doing it so. I was almost 100% that Smith would kill Talley, but Talley's 1st thought and move was to his daughter and wife. Great moment - Smith actually repenting himself wanted to kill Talley - the savior of his children out of the burning house! I think he was just mesmerized by the honesty of Talley's emotions towards his family. Willis is very good in this movie. He's still -the man-, he can still bring things in order by kickin' some bastard's azz but in this film with a fresh emotional side, not so typical for him in his movies. Now, he's a very loving and carrying husband and dad :) Very good film. 8/10
