Resident Alien (2021)
Very impressed with the whole thing
From the writing to the acting, this is a really well made. Tudyk and the rest of the cast do an awesome job creating a really funny show. Sure hope I can find the rest of the seasons not avaiable on Netflix.
While Tudyk carries the show with his fish out of water but very relatable alien (masquerading as a human he ended up killing after a confrontation), the other actors are also great in their roles. I really like all of them, from the insecure cop and his downbeaten partner to the downbeat ex-athlete bar owner.
It is a rare thing that the family just goes all in on a random show we find on Netflix one night, but I really recommend Resident Alien to everyone.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
An embarrasment
The same plot could probably pass as a 3/10 for a regular slasher movie, but this is an embarrasment to both franchises. It's just lazily done all the way through, with the mediocre writing, unimaginative story, bad lighting, over-shaky camerawork, topped with some cheap gore to try to fill this pothole of a movie in for the people who are happy with getting just that. The directors have since gone on to demonstrate that they're barely capable of making B-movies and lately not capable of making money on movies. Let's hope the industry has figured this out as well, so they can stick to doing special effects.
3Below: Tales of Arcadia (2018)
Great addition to the ToA family
The series is more fast-paced in general than Trollhunters and doesn't have the double-season size of Trollhunters' first season. This means we don't get under the character's skin in quite the way we did with Claire, Jim, Toby and the gang. If still works brilliantly, even if I might have wanted more time with Krel, Ajaa and Varvatos Vex.
The whole family is looking forward to season 2.
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Heart and soul
This is a pretty good show!
The 2d-3d animation works well enough, as most things do once you accept it and get into the story.
It doesn't drag its feet but gets right on track in a few episodes. The characters - good and bad(?) are alive and engaging. Its storyline is strong. There are good messages in it. It doesn't bury you in attempts to do world building beyond what is necessary for a show of its type; the world gets revealed step by step as the story progresses. Both kids and parents will find something here.
Overall, this one will get its second season and more if Netflix knows what it's doing and it stays in form. Looking forward to more.
Iron Fist (2017)
Quite decent show! Very light spoilers.
I have no idea why this show was so panned by critics. It doesn't really feel very different from the other Defenders. It is nice to see a hero who is (at least in the beginning) neither unlikable (as Daredevil often was) nor brooding (as Luke Cage often was). He has much more of a "new hero" vibe than the others.
The supporting cast, a strong set in the other shows, is also quite good. It is refreshing to see, in Ward, a long-suffering victim of abuse whose reaction to his circumstances is not immediate anger, but confusion. Colleen is interesting from the start, although her arc has a few bumps towards the end. The villains are partly recycled and padded out and partly new, and work decently well. They're not The Purple Man, but that was very much a JJ feature that only worked well there.
For the story, I cannot see many of the critics' main complaint points at all. It is as if they forgot that Daredevil turned into a Punisher fanfic midway (and Matt himself became intensely unlikable) and Luke Cage's main villain was as interesting as wallpaper and a giant cliché, whose appearance dropped the more interesting "we're a superhero The Wire" pair that worked so well in that show. The plot isn't unnecessarily convoluted, although it takes its time to get going, which is NOT a bad thing. The Iron Fist backstory is such an oddball thing you really need some time with Danny to begin with, or it is just going to feel forced.
Overall, very watchable. I am looking forward to Luke mentoring the relatively green Danny in The Defenders now.
