It look promising but pacing kills it
14 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was curious at first and I was enjoying it but it was so slow I started nodding off. I would have edited a good 20 mins off it. Do we really need to see the butler going to pick up the nun, the nun on the boat, the nun arrives home ? All underscored but the excruciating music in living memory, a strangled cat would me more tolerable. Do we need to see Pinochet stumbling around anywhere on his Zimmer frame except for when he remembers he can fly. If it was meant to be a comedy, it is one for very dry stuck up individuals as it certainly not a funny movie, weird perhaps. The photography is good but it's black and white suggests an artistic endeavour I do not see. Some good ideas but then it gets repetitive. And soooo much voice over.

Entertaining but needlessly sad.
24 December 2021
A sad ending as this is not in the spirit of a James Bond movie. Even if Daniel Craig was never coming back the ending should have been anything but what we witnessed. I suspect not many people will appreciate it. Also a new Bond movie will have to be a complete restart. But this could have been a choice rather than this inevitable outcome. That aside the movie as good as its predecessors under Craig. Lea Seydoux was terrific too. The plot scarily realistic.

Great dubbing options, great show.
21 April 2021
Thanks heavens for Netflix give the audiences the option to watch this dubbed instead of the horrible subtitles. Subtitles are the death of cinema and put off the masses who otherwise would watch this. Hopefully one day in the future everyone will shot movies and series in the same language so we can focus on the story, the characters, the locations and learn something new. I wouldn't have watched this if there wasn't a dubbing option and would have missed out on a great series. The lead is very good and hypnotic.

UFO Robo Grendizer (1975–1977)

The best series of my childhood
4 July 2019
I knew it as Goldrake in my childhood in Italy and I love it above all other cartoons. Japanese animation was massive in Italy at the anime with all sorts themes from mechs like Goldrake, Gundam, Jeep Robot, Mazinga and Daitarn 3 or Captain Harlock to the weird and sinister like Bem to the sweet and romantic like Heidi and Lady Oscar. All massively popular. I would love to see a live action version of Goldrake but the japs are napping on this subject whilst Hollywood subjects us to imitations like Transformers and Pacific Rim for a perceived western audience.

From story driven to bad executive decision
9 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen it happen on many series when decision to continue a series has been taken but there is no longer a plot to follow, writers start to make stuff as they go along. In GoT it feels contrived because now the saga has to end and the writers have decided how it ends rather than let story reach its natural conclusion so suddenly we see lovely Daenerys Queen of Dragons in love with John Snow become Mad Queen so the writers assume she can be killed off less painfully. The killing of the dragon is executed very poorly as nobody accepts Daenerys from high above could not see those boats, let alone attack from beyond at leisure. Again, the writers decided to kill off a dragon and that was that. Then of course Daenerys going so close to the castle with her might 30 men unit to ask for surrender was on the funny side. Unintentionally. Messing up Game of Thrones should stain those writers career forever so beware.

Van Helsing: Birth Ritual (2018)
Season 3, Episode 13
2/10
You wait for an ending but it's not there
17 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of Season 3 is not fulfilled (you need to kill ten elders and steal their totems) and is even forgotten. No mention of totems, just stuff made up at the last minute. Sam turning into an elder that looks like the Devil (from a Panic at the Disco video) beats it all. The writing is terrible. The Oracle has powers to freeze and Vanessa shows her red eyes when she is angry, some super powers (are they for Season 4?). Axel threat to Vanessa as he retreats is really funny but somehow I don't think it was meant to be. Total mess, congrats to the Producers. Don't count on me for Season 4.

Christ Almighty !

....what a lot of nonsense. After Episode 10 I thought they had run out of ideas until I saw this. What's this episode about ? How does it progress the overall story ? It doesn't, at all, that's right. Axel and Scarlett meet a modern Jesus ? Oh man. Lol

Van Helsing (2016–2021)

Season 3 disaster.
17 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It begins by telling us that now Vanessa has to kill all 10 elders (wasn't just one ?) and steal their totem but by episode 3 they decided to take it slow and do a bunch of pointless mini stories that did not progress the overall story at all. I find myself skipping through episode 10 where Vanessa spends time reviewing her past. Then we get Axel sister appearing and dying in the same episode, she didn't serve a purpose. But at least I had the gran finale to look forward to, right ? Oh man. Vanessa, once again, zaps her eyes, shows her beautiful red eyes when she is pissed but she is absolutely useless, and paralysed of course by the oracle with powers of her own. Mohamed is the usual lame duck, Vanessa sister decides it's her turn to die now and to cap it all we have Sam. As the rest of the elders are on holiday and unavailable, Sam not only turns into an elder now but he is the outright Devil with beautiful horns and all, straight out of a Panic at the Disco video. Then we have Axel laughable threat to Vanessa (don't let me see you again..) as he retreats off screen to drain his sorrow. And of course Season 3 have no ending at all, nobody fucking dies. The baddie is supposed to die. No, says the executive, we have to milk it for another season. At this point I am waiting for Phil to become the next elder. No sorry, Season 3 totally ruined it for me. In my experience of this, The studio let's a show run but reduces investment when they stop caring for it. Did they change the writers ? My son could have come up with a better storyline. Lazy lazy lazy. Oh, I am still waiting for Vanessa super powers besides the zapping red eyes. And Scarlett will be back....tataaa... (wtf says the oracle...)

Wayward Pines (2015–2016)
3/10
Daft but intriguing
12 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of Wayward Pines was exciting to me, from the trailer it looked like a Twin Peaks like setting with great film stars like Matt Dillon. Until I started to watch it. Just like a poor horror movies characters behavior doesn't make any sense, worst of all, Dillon's character is a secret agent, not your average guy, and yet he wonders and stumbles around like a village idiot. Everything Dillon's character does verges on the irritating, we, the audience, all get what's going on, with the same knowledge as him, and yet he just doesn't get it. When he tries to do something daring he, predictably, leaves doors open behind and silly stuff like that, you know he will get caught ! And when his wife goes searching for him, first she acts as cleaver as 007 then acts as dumb as anything just to do the predictable thing, be trapped in Wayward Pines too. It's not all bad, it's atmospheric and solidly acted and, despite all its pitfalls, you kind of still want to find out what happens next. It's a kind of Truman Show meet Stepford Wives. I, personally, sort of expect them to be all clones but I am curious to find out what is the nature of the experiment that is being conducted in the giant lab that is Wayward Pines.

Solomon Kane (2009)

Solomon Kane 2 ?
23 June 2013
Me, my wife and kids all loved this and, seeing as it has been successful all over Europe, I don't understand the US ostracism, maybe Hollywood doesn't like to see anyone else making blockbusters, maybe they see it as the beginning of a threat, but it was brilliant portrayal of a classic character, long being imitated by the likes of Van Helsing and other rubbish and it finally put on the map James Purefoy, a really good actor. I found it really baffling no one is picking this up and doing a sequel, I am sure Purefoy would love it. I do not know what happened to brilliant director Michael Bassett going off to do crap like Silent Hill 3D. Sometimes career choices really do wreck you but at least Purefoy is still available and the World wants to see a sequel, Hollywood or not !
