Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Staggering piece of cinema
So have to put the words out there, Martin Scorsese film is out on theatres and I was glad enough to watch it while left contain myself to the fact - still living in the same era as him!
That was an epic 3hours plus show, slow-paced classic plot build-up, patient story-telling yet still gripping your nerves till the very end. Riveting performances of course - Lily Gladstone is the soul of this movie!
I have been watching Leonardo Di Caprio since 'Catch Me If You Can' days and calling him the Best Actor of his generation - Acting masterclasses one after another and this is best performance I have seen of him !
At the end of the show, Marty showed up himself at a play and literally asking - Well, I'm 80years old now, please tell me who's been telling better stories and making better films than me uh?!
Take a bow, King! Cinema is truly well and alive!
Oppenheimer (2023)
Nolan's best yet
Oppenheimer is a monumental cinematic achievement by Christopher Nolan! A deep dive character study(biopic) into a man who historically changed the world forever and how masterfully crafted!
By far this is Nolan's least 'action' film that warrants lots of attention, there is no CGI but lots of conversations going on.. took his time to build the plot(kept it intense) then blast off ! The last hour was a gripping tale of the conscience of mankind and 3hours just flew by...
Cillian Murphy was excellent as Robert Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr delivered an Oscar-worthy performance with the superb supporting cast all around! Terrific sound designs and Goransson haunting score was amazing!
All this while watching Nolan movies and his filmmaking over the years, I thought he is someone god-tier level but after watched that ending of Oppenheimer tonight, I'm fairly convinced that he is the god ! Cinema at its peak!
#Oppenheimer.
The Batman (2022)
Hands down, Matt Reeves
The Batman was meticulously euphoric! Matt Reeves not only lived up the hype but delivered one for the ages..! From the character arcs to the thrilling narrative and execution, man run the show in a Fincher-esque way (shades of Zodiac/Se7en) and had enough fanboy moments!
Robert Pattinson did justice to that cape crusader he was wearing - after early skeptics of his casting, he did excellent all the way(never doubted him! Paul Dano the Riddler was a menacing act while Collin Ferrel as Penguin steals the show every freaking time he showed up! Zoe Kravitz the Catwoman was superb! Perfect casting!
Greig Fraiser's atmospheric visuals rich with dark themes and neon-noir frames of Gotham City was feast to watch! Giachino score was eccentric - super pumped up for that Batmobile chase scene!
This is probably the best DC movie I've seen since Nolan's The Dark Knight and will go down as one of the best comic book movies ever made!
Hands down, Matt Reeves !
Karnan (2021)
Karnan lived up!
Karnan was immense! There are very few films which could create such hype(with teasers, songs) raise the expectations each time and come out let you experience, watching lived up to it, Karnan is one!
Maari Selvaraj after the cult classic success of Pariyerum Perumal, brought in Dhanush to play Karnan - make his statement even stronger and wider reach, and duly delivered! The supporting cast of them been excellent! The Art works, leave you with lots of metaphors there to ponder..
Dhanush - when you thought, seen it all, what else he could offer on screen.. Man is time again, standing firm right there with rage in his eyes - just to remind you, he is the best actor of this generation and you can't argue much about it!
Credits to Santosh Narayan on the stupendous score, moved each scene with much conviction and powerful theme! He is the unsung hero of both Dhanush and Mari.. Loved all the songs!
I would talk about this movie day and nights but one thing - Maari Selvaraj probably the best thing to have happen to Tamil cinema since VetriMaran(IMO) and he fondly holds the torch to keep it bright in times to come!
Putham Pudhu Kaalai (2020)
A breath of fresh air
Putham Pudhu Kaalai is a fresh breath of air among the recent online platform streaming releases.. 5directors joined hands for short tales of love, hope and warmth..
My favourite of the anthology is Sudha Kongara's Ilamai Idho Idho - breezy love story of a young and elder couples, well acted and delightfully narrated out of her comfort zone!
Avarum Naanum(GVM) - Heart warming tale of granddaughter(Ritu) and uncle(MS Basker aced it).. Kanna Thoothu Poda track(Govind Vasantha) in Bombay Jayshree voice is sheer bliss!
Reunion(Rajiv Menon) - Story of a reunion between 2 school mates, one of them affected by covid, moments of despair and repair.. Neatly done!
Coffee anyone(Suhasini) - Story of 3sisters and relationship with their ill mother and care taking father.. this was missing the emotional depth, fall short for me but still okayish!
Miracle(Karthik Subbaraj) - Man ends the anthology with a smart cracker! Humourous with his trademark touch of twist! Fun ride!
Overall, a brilliant attempt and feel-good narratives of people relationships amidst this covid outbreak with beautiful music score all over it, well delivered! More of this please!
Tenet (2020)
Nothing short of a spectacular show!
First big release since the outbreak, guess Christopher Nolan hit it out of the park again.. Tenet nothing short of a spectacular show, a mind bending, espionage-thriller ride(seamlessly 2 and half hours)
3reasons to watch: Nolan filmmaking, Hoyte Van Hoytema visuals, Ludwig Goranson background score!
Brilliant casting: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Anthony Taylor, Elizabeth, Kenneth, Dimple Kapadia all well played! Stunning action blocks and visuals, with the amazing score (Hans Zimmer vibes) and that Boeing blast part was little dramatic.. IMAX is a must!
Asuran (2019)
Another Vetrimaran cult classic!
Alright, the most anticipated combo Dhanush-Vetrimaran strikes gold again! Asuran, an adapted story from a famous novel Vekkai, watch the father-son show goes on..
This two man Dhanush-Vetri and their bonding, been watching them since Aadukalam, probably my favourite duo in tamil cinema after Maniratnam-ARR combo(something you can trust and assure that they can deliver, in such sense).. Their passion and dedication for good cinema and the movie success, reminds of the classic partnership of legendary Martin Scorsese- Robert DeNiro of hollywood!
Vetri knows he has got good story in hand, then script writing and to bring that alive on screen with proper casting, solid narration and execution of the plot shows how good he is at his work - a master storyteller!
In recent times, as much I have seen, nobody does intermission point greater than him in tamil cinema, like when to pause the show and from which point to move forward to second half, and to make it look even more gripping, Asuran sequence to the interval block(just like Vada Chennai) is a masterstroke!
Dhanush as I claimed before in Vada Chennai, the best actor of his generation, delivered yet another impeccable performance in this, the rise of him from rage phew!! Such a show stopper this man!
Can't wait to witness them strike again in Vada Chennai2 and many more years of them work together ! A VetriMaran film!
Gully Boy (2019)
A terrific underdog poetry on celluloid
Gully Boy not just about Ranveer's rap music underground world, it's beyond that! Zoya Akthar brings this street boy(Murad) out of his Dharavi slum life, gives him hope to dream, battle his struggles to become an aspiring hip hop rap musician, she keeps it realistic all the way! Ranveer was on terrific form, he was passionate, he lit up the audition rap scenes, owed it to the superb Siddhant Chaturvedi on the supporting role as MC Sher! Man killed it big time in Apna Time Aayega showdown, rapped it himself! The movie consist of banger of tracks(credits to bunch of musicians involved) but thought Zoya strike the right chords, keep it authentic for the sake of story and explode it towards the ending! Alia bhatt's Safeena was all heart! and This man Ranveer Singh is one helluva showman! Amazing film!
Tumbbad (2018)
An Indian cinematic marvel!
Finally watched Tumbbad! Has to be the most original horror-fantasy periodic film to have come out from Indian Cinema this year! Never seen such mythical thriller ride with brilliant writing, terrific story telling and equally stunning visual narratives! Take a bow, writers and directors ! Well crafted Masterpiece!
How I wish our Indian cinema delve into this fantasy genre explore more! #tumbbad
Pariyerum Perumal (2018)
Tamil Cinema be proud of
It was a movie that I was dying to watch.. A movie that I was so glad managed to watch on the first day release here.. A movie that made me goosebumps in the first 10mins run into it.. A movie that I scream out on mute on the Interval point.. A movie that made me crushed, rip off inside on many points of the runtime.. and it was a movie, at the end, I walked out feeling proud of our tamil cinema for once! #PariyerumPerumal
Taking a bow, Director Mari Selvaraj! 🙏🏼
Merku Thodarchi Malai (2018)
Best content movie of the year!
This kind of films comes out of tamil cinema once in bluemoon, brings you to their life(Western Ghats) in frames, tells you an incredible untold story, hits you hard and left you stumble for words!
It's an evidence of tamil cinema that good movie doesn't require any big names or experienced actors to run the show, not master storyteller to narrate story, no fancy screenplay, no out-of-box twist or turns, nor cliche-endings! Good content will speak itself!
Credits goes to all the actors worked in this movie, very realistic yet rooting performance, had some memorable moments for themself! this is the best assembled casting I've seen in a non-mainstream cinema since Aruvi! All of them unsung hero of this journey!
And this is one movie that I felt the importance and presence of Maestro Ilayaraja in tamil cinema.. probably only him could have scored such hard warming tunes, lifted the movie to next stage whenever hits deep bottom! He has been nothing but nostalgic!
On last note, got to credit the captain of this well crafted tale of tragedy, Lenin Barathi! take a bow director sir, you own the best content movie of the year so far! And thank you Legend, Vijay Sethupathy for producing this rare gem! #MerkuThodarchiMalai
Wind River (2017)
Most underrated movie of 2017
If someone ask me for a movie to suggest to watch, I would recommend this! If you have not watch this yet, go do yourself a favour and watch this! From storytelling, to casting(Jeremy Renner finest), to brilliant narration, sublime film-making this! An underrated gem!
Aruvi (2016)
Waterfall of human mixed-emotions
Aruvi is a waterfall of human mixed-emotions pouring flawlessly out of screen.. It looks so beautiful outside when this characters makes you amuse and laugh effortlessly, and the next frame, it hits you deep as hard the water hits the rock at the bottom.. The sight of very passionate filmmaker(newcomer Arun Prabu) who not only titled his movie(Aruvi) perfectly but also narrated it flawlessly..
The casting almost entirely new faces, looks like just graduated from a film academy but very well played their role.. While the lovely-rebellious Aditi Balan(Aruvi) given a lifetime performance which lingers wild in your mind, her supporting cast the transgender character was a shoutout-heart winning performance!
The story-to think, this terrific idea of this storyline, filmmaking concept coming out from Arun Prabu ingenious mind, is an amazing thing.. something that only director Bala could do at this mainstream tamil cinema level.. This guy has done it masterfully with all the right elements of a exemplary cinematic experience, loved his thoughtful non-cliche ending.!
Just another best part of the movie is the music score, the work of newcomers Bindhumalini&Vedanth was fabulous, striking the right chords all the way!
Aruvi is an silent scream from Tamil cinema to the world that they could produce such rare gems at times! To the director Arun Prabu, take a bow Sir, your fascinating-masterpiece is the best film of the year! #Aruvi
Man of Steel (2013)
Thanks Nolan, Goyer and Synder for the reboot!
Frankly I'm not a real fan of Superman not until I saw the name of Christopher Nolan(Man of Inception) in the first teaser, I made myself an 'instant' fan of this Superhero.. Nolan's brilliant storyline plus with David Goyer's excellent screenplay, Zack Snyder managed to pull this off impressively.. Spectacular visuals and CGI effects just breathtaking.. Hans Zimmer compose was majestic right till the end.. Steelman Henry Cavill fits the Superhero role almost perfectly.. The battle scenes with Zod(Micheal Shannon)probably some of the best you would ever witness(IronMan what)?? Strong supporting cast of Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne all delivered subtly.. Hats off to Nolan, Goyer and Snyder for the reboot!! Ignore the haters and critics, just go watch and be blown away effortlessly!! Movie of the summer definitely!! 9.5/10!!
