Naach (2004)
RGV makes Naach Rock!
RGV rocks with Naach. Naach is when two personalities meet - an individualistic and objective artist (dancer), Reva and an ambitious but succumbing actor, Abhinav. Reva wants to stamp her identity in her work. Abhi wants to be famous and rich although he realises that it makes him look foolish. Reva is sure; she is sure that she is right; she is sure that her way is the only way; so she is ready to wait for the world to bow down to her feet. Abhi is insecure. Abhi is pathetically in love with Reva because deep inside he desires to be what Reva is. Reva loves Abhi because he is among the few who know she is right.
If you have read Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead then you will find that Reva is a Howard Roark while Abhi is almost a Peter Keating!
Naach is a must watch for its choreography, for its camera, its writing which is minimalist, and the performance of the actors. The effort RGV puts into making the characters credible is praiseworthy. You will have no problems believing that there are people like these. The movie keeps you restless throughout the movie, an RGV trademark.
Some people will go to the theaters for Antara's skin, but the once who have seen enough skin and muscle in their lives will be able to tear through the distorting mesh and enjoy the movie at a higher level.
The negative to the movie is its music not very good music for a musical. The music was experimental, as it should be, but wasn't experimental enough.
The humour comes in the form of spoofs and sarcastic takes on Bollywood and it's so called Gurus.
This movie does rock.
Bride & Prejudice (2004)
The Worst A Woman can get
I had heard that this movie is not as good as Bend It Like Bekham. But I got the VCD of the Hindi dubbed version titled Balle Balle Amritsar to LA. (All my comments are in relation only to the version I watched.)
The title cracked me up some weeks ago. I saw a trailer with Aishwarya Rai dancing with a white guy with water springs shooting up in sky in the background and the white guy sang in Hindi.
The first thing wrong with the film is the title. Throughout the movie I could feel the attitude of the maker - trivialising film making. Beckham was funny, but in this one Gurinder Chadha tries to extract humour out of trivialising the art of film making, trivialising her characters and thereby the whole movie. There is hardly a good funny moment in the movie.
Just imagine going to a restaurant and ordering every dish they have putting it in a big bucket, mixing it up and hoping that it would taste good. Gurinder tried that. It tastes awful.
The characters are poorly sketched. There is no concept of relationship building. The second sentence that people say to each other sounds like they know each other since years. Dialogues have been written with no seriousness or thought. There is too much happening at an unrealistic pace. Somehow the flow and direction of narration lacks credibility. Everything in the movie is fake. The director has made no effort to understand the real people and has gone on her own ride using people for granted. Her understanding of Indians and Westerners - both - is out of the real. There is extreme polarisation. There is nothing new about this. The love for Indian culture is more jingoistic than real. And what better way to show love for Indian culture than by bringing westerners and making them say crappy things about India. It's so old, I don't even think people do that the way they do in this movie.
The funny moments are those ridiculous scenes. The best of them is the last scene with Darcy hitting the Dhol.
By the Way, through the first half of the movie I thought Aishwarya Rai was the eldest sister. But it seems Namrata Shirodkar is. LOL. Aishwarya Rai looks so much older than Namrata.
Gurinder tried too much Marketing while making this film - this film is the worst ever film a man or a woman could make.
Dhoom (2004)
2Fast 2 Furious + The Italian Job + Oceans Eleven + x y z = DHOOM
If you have watched 2Fast 2 Furious, The Italian Job, Oceans Eleven then you can give Dhoom a miss. OR, you could watch Dhoom to learn the Bollywood art of composition and translation of Hollywood movies into the Indian context. And there Dhoom doesn't do that bad a job.
Probably the director thought that the majority of Indian people would not have access to such Hollywood movies and hence took upon him the responsibility of providing them a similar experience. It is this service that he has done which has probably made this film a "hit".
SPOILER ======= (Movie Summary) A gang of 4 bikers with Imported bikes that can do a 260-280km/hr r robing banks one after the other. The Mumbai police with its vehicles finds it impossible to get a hold on them. Jai (Abhishek bachchan) is the police inspector (who hardly wears the KHAKI) in charge of the case. He gets in contact with Ali, a bike mechanic, a racer and a dealer in stolen bikes. He doesn't directly get to Ali. Helping him here is a completely useless Rimi Sen, his wife who befriends Ali after he saves a dog from getting crushed on the road. John Abraham is the leader of the gang. He's got a few guys under him. 2 of them are brothers. One of the brothers hates John - just to keep the gang scenes interesting (ha!)
The camera is not exemplary, as some would tell you. The camera avoids showing a fast moving bike, the road and the face of the actor all in a single frame. So if you have seen better camera work, and better action sequences Dhoom is not going to add any to your fav list.
Esha Deol plays the X factor. The writer has placed her character such that it allows him to justify a few things. She is the "spy kind" who finally becomes a friend. She is sexy. But am sure you have seen sexier scenes and women.
the worst part of the film is the dialogue writing. Its at its crappiest best when Uday Chopra is saying them. Uday Chopra cannot hide the low quality scenes because of his pathetic acting. But Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham can do that cos they have done their job far better.
The only positives go to Abhishek Bachan and Rimi Sen. Abhishek Bachchan cos he has acted really well. Rimi Sen cos she just discovered that she is HOT. Oh she is hot in the scene where she is cleaning the roof stretching her body.
So there you go. If you haven't watched those three Hollywood flicks you are going to enjoy Dhoom. If you have, you still won't run away from the screen. Dhoom is not as bad as most other Hindi movies. Its watchable. So people who don't mind that 100 rupee ticket go ahead and watch Dhoom. I advice having something to pass your time with apart from the movie, like some pop corn, or a girl friend or a Nokia ngage.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
A brilliant script. A genius.
The movie is a brilliant script that I hear Matt Damon wrote for a English class when he was in college.
Mysteriously I always missed the movie when it was on television, and it was played several times. I would watch just the start and miss the rest each time due to some or the other reason. Finally I watched it in whole now on 21st Nov 2003.
Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a genius for whom most of mumbo-jumbo math and O-chem is "just a joke". He works as a janitor in MIT and solves a problem written on the board in the passage he mops. He is discovered by Prof. Gerry who gets him out of jail (assault charges) on two conditions 1) Will Hunting works with Prof. Gerry 2) He sees a therapist.
Will has a tough shell around him which he doesn't let anyone crack open and trespass. He is cocky, abusive and least bit considerate towards Prof. Gerry's attempts at polishing him into a Genius who can be of use than a Genius who just ends up being a construction worker all his life. Enter Robin Williams and the rest is for you to watch. Must watch.
Robin Williams plays his role so well that you forget you are watching a movie, you forget he is an actor and not a professor or a psychologist. This happens to me each time I watch a Robin Williams film. The sessions that Robin Williams and Matt Damon have are some of the best parts of the movie and the last session where Sean McGuire (Robin Williams) finally succeeds in opening up Will Hunting is the best scene of the movie.
The character of Will hunting seems to be complex but it is not really. Why would a genius not want to work for some big company or the US Defence and make millions or billions? Why does he just wanna be what he is? And it frustrates you as the viewer, while ur trying to find the key that would open him up. Ur frustrated waiting for him to stop being so arrogant, why the hell can't he be a bit 'nice' to these guys? Ur trying to be a detective, and trying to find the great reasons. And that is how the script brings a mild suspense and tension to itself, mild.
Minnie Driver, the English girl is an amazing actress. She is such a normal girl, who laughs loud and can still be gentle and she is very smart too, and vulnerable. U think why is Ben Affleck doing whatever he is doing in the movie. Ben Affleck answers this question brilliantly in a scene that works as a catalyst in the transformation of Will Hunting's character. Stellan Skarsgård (Prof. Gerald Lambeau) who takes up the challenge of refining the Gold ore that he mined shows great patience. One would really feel for him and his passion for math, especially if ur a lover of math.
This is one of the best stories and a very well sketched script. Go get a DVD.
