Madame Web (2024)
This falls on the screenwriter and director
The plot of the movie is great. The lead four actors are great. But beyond that everything is terrible. The screenplay has so many holes and is so ridiculously childish, even your kids wouldn't want to watch this on Saturday morning. I can't believe anyone could produce such nonsensical dialogue as this. And that any people could get behind this to produce it, knowing how poorly it was being created.
This could've been a great movie, with Dakota's character gaining her powers before birth thru a spider that bit her mother, trying to save mom's life. But the villain actually gives Dar Ben (from the Marvels) a run at being a really poorly written and stupid character. The 3 young actresses/actors act well, but the writing was so poor it cast them in bad standing, thru no fault of their own.
If you're really bored, you might make it thru this movie. I had to ff some parts as the dialogue was killing me.
Fool Me Once (2024)
Some nice spins and twists
If you get past the irritating protagonist constantly doing the work of the police without being charged with interference, this would rate much higher. That is a direct fault of the plot/writing. The performances are spot on and the characters are all believable. The end finally gives full closure and explains everything. I honestly did not know who killed the husband until the very end. But to finally show that it was the husband that was on a killing spree, first thru forced alcohol poisoning, then pushing his own brother off a boat, killing his sister in law when she found the pharmaceuticals were not safe, you find Maya justified in killing her own husband. Also, with Maya's guilt over killing the innocent civilians, her death is also justified, although not at the hands of anyone with justification.
Ghosted (2023)
A fun movie that does NOT take itself seriously
Both Evans and de Armas do a really fun job of selling the movie as two VERY different characters. In this case, he's the bumbling lovesick puppy and she's the superspy. The movie is an over-the-top romp with many cameos that just add to the hyjinx. It's great to see Evans spread his acting skills and show he doesn't have to be the strong, powerful leading man and can, instead, play the awkward, yet committed boyfriend wannabe. And de Armas does a great job as the female superspy. She really looked like a James Bond/Jason Bourne hero and the editing made her very realistic. The ONLY minor nitpick was the end, when they were out on date night... I thought for sure they'd go out and see 'The Exorcist'.
Enola Holmes (2020)
Fun little film about ENOLA
I see many posters complaining, comparing this to a Sherlock book/movie. I don't understand why the comparison. This is more a coming-of-age film about a young woman that rebels against the male-dominant culture and does things *her way*. While her focus was primarily on finding her mother, Out in the real world, she finds things not as simple as her previous cocooned life. She doesn't subscribe to the damsel-in-distress needing help from men, and on the contrary, is in the dominant role of protector on several occasions. Her older brother, Mycroft, is a typical male in the sense of *men dominant, women subservient* role. He is the most one-note character of the film. Younger brother, Sherlock, is more nuanced and balanced, often seen as a role model for the burgeoning investigative talents of his younger sister. This is an excellent role for Millie Bobby Brown, expanding her talents to become a lead in a movie. I loved her breaking the fourth wall and being the primary was an amazing supporting cast. I love her transitioning from child actor to adult/young adult actor, with her character in this movie doing the same.
Cursed (2020)
I don't understand all the negativity
This is actually a very entertaining series. Since Arthurian legend is exactly that... legend... there is no *right* or *wrong*. They create a great narrative and build a nice story. Are there some slow parts? Yes, but in every series there is a period where you build up to the conclusion. I enjoyed the actors and thought the plotline worked. I really enjoyed that everyone and every group had their own agenda and often stabbed each other in the back. With many series, they don't seem to leave it in a good place for a second season. With this series, they did. I am already looking forward to a second season and hope this gets renewed.
Locke & Key (2020)
Good Sci-fi while being honest with teenagers
I never read the source material so I am ONLY coming from that perspective. First, teenagers do NOT always act logically or rationally. And these teens (and pre-teen) were written that way. The acting and writing was first-rate and there were very few plot holes, which shows this was well designed and well crafted. I was mildly surprised with the ending, but won't say any more than that. I only jumped into this from a Netflix notification recently, but I really enjoyed this. They also left it where a second season is almost a guarantee.
Titans: Nightwing (2019)
Great finale except that...
Donna Troy died. I gave it a 9 since we didn't get the one thing I wanted to see... Rachel help resurrect Donna. Overall, the season started well but got a little slow in the middle. But then it went BOOM in this finale. Someone at DC finally created a series that I fully enjoy. Great characters and character development, including their flaws, writing and action. I don't know if DC has a long-term plan in place, but this series could go on for awhile, with many spinoffs. One last... the actors are fantastic. You can truly see how they *are* their characters.
Prodigal Son: Fear Response (2019)
Co-conspirator
How long until Bellamy Young's character is found to be or have been a co-conspirator to Dad's deeds?
The InBetween: Made of Stone (2019)
Justified?
Spoilers:
A man's family are killed by a hit and run driver. Thin incompetent police never find the killer. The man is able to track them down 4 years later and tries to take his vengeance out on that family's wife and son. BTW, when the police investigated the first crime, the mother lied to the police about her car being stolen and used for the crime. In the end, the mother and son survive, the hit and run driver goes to jail for about 10 years (per the police) and the guy who lost everything is in jail for attempted murder. Result, the two cops investigating the kidnapping and attempted murders are happy. What a crock!
Paterno (2018)
Typical twisting
Since the facts are always skewed for a movie, I'm not surprised how bad this is.
The Orville: All the World Is Birthday Cake (2019)
Always interfere before you know anything
Maybe I just don't understand this whole series, but it seems like they rush into contacting other species with no respect for their own safety or for the culture they are invading.
One of the aspects that I like about Star Trek is the Prime Directive. Do not interfere in pre-warp civilizations and only study them from afar. Does it always work? No! But to take all the senior officers down to a planet where you know nothing of their customs and laws, and act surprised when your officers are arrested, is ridiculous.
Study them from orbit. Look at their communications, laws, cultures, etc. If you have the ability to superficially do cosmetic surgery to appear like them, then go to the ground and learn more.
But this show is just the opposite. Blindly go in, interfere in their culture and cause animosity between the Orville and a first contact species and basically burn your bridge.
And they don't learn from these mistakes... they just keep making them.
Like I said, I don't understand. The whole purpose of exploring is to learn, but the Orville never seems to.
Iron Fist (2017)
The worst of the Marvel shows... so far
Let's start with the good - the acting was fine. The actors made the best of a poor script and direction.
The bad - the main character makes no sense. Why would monks choose someone so constantly emotionally reactive to be the Guardian, Iron Fist? He acts so childishly, so immaturely. How could anyone look back on someone that bullied them as their *brother*? In the real world you wouldn't want anything to do with them. But here, Danny tries to make friends with him by reconnecting. And that's a minor annoyance.
A major annoyance... when he goes into battle he has no plan. He just goes in angry. In any real battle you go in with some kind of plan. But Danny is an idiot. I find it hard to believe that this series is being considered for a second season. This is the weakest of the four (Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil) as a standalone and he was the most senseless in the Defenders.
To be clear, this is the fault of the writing and direction, not the actors. They only do as instructed.
Birds of Prey (2002)
Really, really good precursor to all the DC shows out now (2017)
I just downloaded and binge-watched the series. The only real flaw is that some of the special effects are kinda dated... but it is 15+ years old. This show had a fantastic cast. And if you compare the fight scenes to those on Arrow, Flash, etc., this is right there with them... only 15 years earlier. Most of the negative comments are from supposed *purists* that can't accept that this doesn't EXACTLY follow the comic book canon. Instead, it's a beautiful adaptation of an alternate to the comic books. Of course, the naysayers don't admit that there are more than 5 iterations of Batman and 8 of Superman, but no... how dare the BoP not follow their sexist, preconceived idea of what this HAD to be. Dina, Ashley and Rachel were fantastic leads. It's too bad the network gave up on this series after only 13 eppys.
