Frankenstein (2015)
I am I
This is a very interesting take on the Frankenstein tale. We get to see the Monster basically take his first breath and become born into this world. He slowly becomes accustomed to being alive when suddenly he's betrayed by his creator and thus sets about on a rampage. This film illustrates it fairly well and I feel like the character of Adam/Monster is fairly sympathetic. He lacks a vocabulary like in the novel and in the 1994 adaptation, but it's far more realistic for the vocalization capacity of a newly formed creature. Bernard Rose does a fairly good job directing and the pastoral dream sequences are nice in particular. It has a nice pace and good use of practical special effects. The Monster's transformation was thoroughly engaging and I feel if anyone is a fan of the horror genre that they should at least do themselves a favor and see this interpretation.
More (1998)
One of the few utterly brilliant short films
Many short films are very entertaining, but More is exactly that. It is without a doubt one of the few short films that I seek out repeatedly and try to comprehend on all of it's vast levels. It tells the simple story of a disillusioned factory laborer in a factory whose dreams of a happy childhood haunt him. After finally finding a way to relive his happiness artificially and gain wealth in turn, he finds himself empty and alone. The theme has been played before, but never with such fitting music. (New Order's "Elegia") The monochromatic and dismal world view of the film enhances the experience. The film is very thought provoking and well timed. Each scene is done with precise intent. Each frame is visually appealing. It is thoroughly a emotional film. Perhaps this is our version of Bliss?
Saw (2004)
One of the worst films ever.
There is without a doubt no amount of additional footage that would have made this film any better than the pile of dog excrement that it is.
I felt sorry for Danny Glover. Having his name associated with such an awful film. And Cary needs to revisit acting classes. Badly. His accent was slipping through so much it became seriously distracting. And the over-the-top acting was cringe inducing.
It's movies like these that make me believe I could become a screenwriter. They are so ambitiously horrible. They steal ideas from movies before them and are shot and edited by crack monkeys. No amount of words can equal the disappointment I felt watching this film unravel into a tangle of illogical inconsistencies and horrendous acting. Not a single 'jump scene' even made me blink. No plot twists that surprised me. The audience was laughing heartily at this wretched film. Laughing because that's all they could do. They were trying to make the best of a bad situation.
I couldn't laugh. I just sat there feeling empty, knowing that my hard earned cash is lining the pockets of people hellbent on creating more of this cinematic drivel.
I expected nothing of genius... just something slightly amusing. This film couldn't even do that. It made me want to rush home and watch a GOOD thriller/horror film. To bleach out the memory of this one.
May (2002)
Different does not equal good.
I don't understand why people keep saying this movie was creepy. I thought it was a Black Comedy. Really, was that film supposed to be scary or creepy in some way? It came off as predictable and over the top. The movie smacks of student film quality. The acting isn't too great, either.
Not only was the film not creepy, but it was so slow. The "gore" seemed so forced. I consider this film a black comedy, but even as such, it's so boring. You'll find yourself waiting desperately for the end to come. Plot was haphazardly built. I kept waiting for the film to be enjoyable in any fathomable way. I kept trying to like some of the film. The music was likable at first and then it became overused. The editing of this film was also badly done at some points. It became an MTV video. Quick slicing does not a "horror" film make.
I would, however, consider the film unique. Parts are obvious homages to Frankenstein and various horror films, but they're not pulled together well enough for me to enjoy the film.
Out of five I would give this film a 1 and a 1/2 stars.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
House of 1000 Groans of Boredom
I am a fan of a good scare and something spine-chilling. In fact, I work at a haunted house. However, this film left me with a headache and very very angry that I paid $8 to see it.
I went into the theater expecting something new and different, something that would scare me right out of my wits! Unfortunately, I was looking to the wrong man, Rob Zombie. This remake of old horror movies doesn't even give a homage to them. It's not even "so bad it's good". It's just horrible.
So many "true horror fans" have reviewed this saying that the gore is the best part. But, in reality they're just fooling themselves. If you want REAL gore why don't they visit sites like Rotten or Ogrish. Sites with real deaths, etc. At least that's somewhat interesting. This movie is NOT gory. It's just a very pathetic attempt at horror. I'm a great fan of B-grade horror movies. I love movies that are so bad you can sort of joke and laugh at them. This movie was so very boring and stupid that me and my companion (also a horror fan) were groaning about it the entire evening. There was no plot. There was no great character development, no great timing. In fact, I can't really think of anything good this movie had except for some female nudity, but even that was sparse and not worth the wait. The end scene was tacked on and every single person in the theater groaned. I wished I had left this movie in mid-film, but I felt so guilty for paying full price that I stayed. It was sheer torture. I wanted to claw out my eyes from boredom. Please, PLEASE just wait for this movie to come out on DVD. The only fans of movie are eager Rob Zombie fans. I've seen his shows, he's a great musician, but a horrible, horrible director.
