Great depth disjointed execution
I admire the sweeping ambition Mr. Lonergan explores here. There are so many layers, motives, and themes explored. Anna Paquin is so good as an entitled teenager who tries to find justice in a cruel world you want to hit her.
My feeling is that as a filmmaker not a dramatist this film may have been out of his scope to execute properly. Certain visual and transitional devices such as slow motion seem desperate and down right ineffective. The tech specs come off weak as we know there was a lot going on behind the scenes. His unique shot selections and editing choices may be off putting to some but he had to work with what he had. The music I felt was intrusive at times. The choice to have audible off screen dialog of passerby's in all corners of the soundtrack is appreciated but could be distracting to others.
Its clearly a labor or love and I salute a filmmaker who goes for something so grand. I highly recommend seeing it flaws and all. I saw the three hour version.
