Charlie & Boots (2009)
yes!
This movie made me smile. I like smiling. It made me smile for a lot of reasons. 1. because its a good heartfelt comedy that we seem to have forgotten how to make over in Oz. We used to be so good at it too. damn you government film bodies! 2. its great to see Paul hogan back, he's a likable guy. this is his best film since croc dundee(which isn't hard). Kenny the portaloo guy makes me smile too. I'd love to get a hug from a big lovable bear it would make you smile. Everyone in this is doing a great job, in front and behind the camera. we are soooooo good at comedy, and internationally people love our comedy. Why the hell aren't we making more comedy? buy it!
Australia (2008)
lead balloon
Wow, how to miss the mark. And everybody was hoping for this to be the big resurgence of Australian cinema. Not this week. Maybe with about another month in the edit and realizing that you have in fact, 1 film and its sequel slapped together they might have made something out of this. And where the hell was Bud Tingwell? Everyone else in Australia that acts is in it and you couldn't find a place for bud? Guess he ended up on the floor. As usual Jackman is fantastic. He always is. Kidman, you know what? She's taking a lot of flack for this but she's good. Its just that they tried to make an epic and didn't get there. An epic is never tried for, it just happens. Go back to musicals my friend because your style does not work with drama. Also, don't blue screen your pickup shots, it sticks out like a sore thumb. At least they gave it a go though so they get points for trying.

Fanpoopytastic
high five to the Jacobsen boys. They deserve it. this is the BEST Aussie comedy since the dish. It just makes you come out feeling like you're walking on sunshine for some reason. And smart film making, they knew their limitations and enhanced the movie by embracing them. Its a simple story but done well and what it does is show you a slice of Australia that you don't know you want to see but you really do. Film bodies listen here! get off the "hey i'm a sad story about a depressed druggie in the inner city battling to survive because life is so gritty and hard" band wagon. The world doesn't want to see that and you know what, its not Australia mate so get over it and stop trying to be arty fools. We are good at comedy and lets get more of it out there. And exploitation films, they need to come back too.
Prey (2009)
hit me in the head with a hammer
Yep, my title says it all and its what i said to a mate when i was watching it. You don't understand how bad this movie is until you watch it. its like a monkey found a football and said i can banging that. He's trying, he's getting the idea but as he goes he keeps falling off and jumping right back on not releasing that everyone watching is in tears of laughter. ah...poor monkey. This movie is the monkey. There are blatant attempts to make this international product by making 2 of the leads American. but their accents are so bad that the dog down the street started to howl in pain, i'm serious. but how's this for editing: 2 cars, 2 cars, 2 cars, 3 CARS, 2 cars, 2 cars. Yep the editor is numerically dyslexic(if thats not spelled right i don't care because the film maker sure as hell didn't) I didn't want my money back though, i never do, because i think of these movies as a cathartic experience. I do want people to know that we do make good movies in Australia, its just that our genre stuff isn't quite hitting the mark right now.
Gabriel (2007)
Halfway there
This movie looks great and everyone on the film needs to be commended for doing such a bang up job with so little money. Its good that Sony took the punt and threw some money in to finish the visual effects because it would have made this ambitious project so much lesser for it without all those finishing touches. To that end you can say that this isn't really a low budget film - not by Australian standards if the rumor of a 5 million injection from Sony is true. My big gripe about this film though is that it could have gone somewhere bad ass but apart from looking cool it pretty much spins its wheels the whole time. This could have been a bad ass angel kill kill kill film but there ends up being lots and lots of talking instead and a few inventive but quick action scenes. But if you're an Aussie buy it because these guys deserve to get their due.
The Dark Lurking (2009)
halfway there again
Come on Aussie film maker guys, genre film makers in Australia are getting closer by the day. this is another one that almost got there, just like Gabriel. first off i found out how much the real budget for this film is and it sure as hell was a lot less than $1mil and that's why this movie deserves a good pat on the back. like Gabriel, this movie looks great.(its a bit dark in some places but its a dark aliens movie so i'm not gonna carry on too much about that) Unlike Gabriel this movie knows how to blow stuff up and splatter the screen with alien slime. Big time! There's my big gripe though and this is where the movie falls down. It should have embraced that and had even MORE than what it had. there's probably 40 minutes of wasted screen time trying to slightly differentiate itself from Cameron's "Aliens". But it didn't need to is what i'm saying. People get that its borrowing heavily from aliens but so what its an exploitation film and aliens was 25 years ago man, let it go. there's a 2 minute action scene on you tube floating around that kicks ass, and that's what i'm saying: the whole movie should have been this, and there is a lot more of this in the film to be sure, hell yes. but...it half is half isn't still. Its like they thought they'd get in trouble for just going nuts. If the movie really cost what they say it did it would have been, i'm sure! Somebody buy this movie so these guys can get a budget and make that exploitation movie that you know they're dying to do. but a 5 will do for now, to me 5 gets you in the green zone and is a good movie. hopefully the next movie is an awesome 7.
