Miller's Girl (2024)
Bad 'Art'
I just don't understand what Hollywood is going for these days. It's like a race to the bottom. Trying to be bad and unlikeable.
How is it even possible for someone as accomplished and presumably intelligent as martin freeman to read this script and think to himself "wow, this sucks - let's do it."
The strange thing about Jenna Ortega is even if she is attached to something lame like this, it doesn't damage her image. She's solid.
The plot is undeveloped and desperately trying to be something it's not. . It's just a mish mash of tropes, begging the audience to appreciate it's non existent depth.
It's bizarre.
The Witcher (2019)
Self-Indulgent Reimagining
I am having a hard time understanding who this show was made for. It's a feminist reimagining of the story. As per usual for shows on Netflix - men are portrayed as brutish, silly, fools and women are the formidable voices of bravery, reason and courage. I would not be bothered by this if the writing was good, the characters had redeemable qualities. Identity politics of the world seeps into almost every scene like a festering stench. Again, this would be fine - if the writing was decent - and the topics were brought up organically, instead they are thrown in your face - fastidiously. The viewer is force fed ideas - the thinking is done for you.
The characters are empty cardboard cutouts of themselves...like is this a spoof, am I watching a parody? Why is there attempted comic relief every 15 seconds?!?
It's hard to believe someone was able to take the life out of such virile personalities - acting is atrocious. Lets put it this way - the dialogue is mouth-breather friendly.
There was some good components. The set design was awesome. Atmosphere was spot-on at times.
If the show revolved around Geralt taking Witcher contracts - preparing, showing his methodology, tracking, stalking, killing etc. It would have been a 10/10 - this is the meat and potatoes. The show misses out on the essence - the core content of the world - which is inexcusable and a huge disservice to the real fans.
But as long as the Marvel crowd is happy who really cares?
