Isanghan byeonhosa Woo Young-woo: A Tale About Sodeok-dong II (2022)
An extraordinary show with extraordinary acting
This show contains many great scenes and most of the actors are great, but the best is the leading lady. However the mother is also great even though she was in only a few scenes so far (eps 8.) The last scene where the daughter revealed the facts, the camera concentrate on the mother's face. You can see the subtle changes of emotion on her face. A masterclass of understated acting.
Love Hard (2021)
Typical romantic Christmas movie
You can tick off the boxes on the list of cliches while watching this movie. You can also guess what is coming ways ahead of the characters. The only good thing this movie did was to allow an Asian to be male lead. But too bad Jimmy O Yang was the lead instead of Harry Shum. Then It'd be more believable.
Ted Lasso (2020)
A charming freshman show
As with "Emily in Paris," Ted Lasso followed the trend of putting American protagonist in unfamiliar settings, this time England. It's basically a fish-out-of-water type of story.
An American coach was hired to guide a soccer team (called football in Europe) by a vengeful ex-wife of the rich team manager. She intended to have Ted sabotage the team due to his being unfamiliar with the sports.
Then came all the cliches of the sport movie tropes. We were introduced to members of the team, each with his own quirks. Some of these quirks got tiresome after a while. Ted has his own ways of dealing with the team and problems. There is a bar where the owner is a spunky lady and the customers who seem to never go home. All of these things we have already seen in all other movies or shows. You can predict what was going to happen next and bet your money on it.
The only things that saved the show is Jason Sudekis. His gentle manners are charming and it helps that there is a palpable chemistry between him and Hannah Waddingham (his lady boss.) Too bad the scenes between them were reduced as the show went on.
The first season is good because it introduced us to many characters and their backgrounds. The second season is less interesting and you can feel the show trying hard to fill out the story lines. Some episodes dragged with not enough materials. If you only watch season 1, that will be enough. I'd rate 7 stars for 1st season, and 4 stars for second one (as of 9/21/2021.)
Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes (2021)
Funny horror show
This show started out as a mystery, then horror. But the surprise is the comedy element. It made me laugh out loud at some parts. All actors are competent and capable, but the brother and the female police deserved accolades.
The brother was affable and unintentionally funny. The female police, Judith, was unrelenting in her pursuit of justice reminds you of Frances McDormand's police woman in Fargo. The main plot wasn't that complicated and you pretty much guess who the culprit was before too long. However the you will have a good time watching it and looking forwards to a second season in the future.
Otwórz oczy (2021)
Marginally interesting series
This show is basically "Lost" in the different settings. Even the ending is what happened in "Lost". There were nice moments here and there. But the weird interactions among characters are tiresome after a while. Adam's idiotic grins make you want to slap him on the head. The main girl, Julia, relied too much on vulnerable looks in every situations is so irritating. The show tried too hard to not reveal anything until the end makes for a frustrating viewing. But kudos for the cinematography.
