How the West Was Won (1962)
Goofs and historical discussion
A large part of the part of the story of the wagon train out of St. Louis is set in the autumn, which is clearly evident from the trees. However, no wagon master in his right mind would leave across the plains any later than about July 4, and even though would not have expected to clear the Rockies before winter at that late date (but this train makes it all the way to the California gold fields). In order to cross the Rockies in the same season, one would have to leave no later than the 15th of June or so. The proof in this is seen even greater as the wagon train is still an integral whole after Lily and Cleve find that her claim is played out. In another point which may be contestable, Zeb Rawlings, as a Captain in the US Army, tried to explain to Mr. King, the railroad man, why the Native Americans (my words, not his) objected to the railroad. He did not include that the iron rails and right of way with its rock basis served as a barrier for the migrating herds, which is one of the major causes of the demise of the herds, probably as much a cause as the buffalo hunters and civilization had on decimating the herds. Because of the inability to migrate, the herds trapped behind a section of newly laid railroad on the north in the summer froze to death and starved for forage; the herds trapped on the south in the winter died of starvation on the cooked southern plains in addition to thirst and heat. Another goof... it sounds like the language the Arapaho are using with Captain Rawlings is the Sioux language. Also, the railroad would not have made an underground bunker which was the only safe place to hid from the stampeding herd of buffalo.
Murder 101: College Can Be Murder (2007)
Murder 101 is MORE than just the Dick Van Dyke whodunit...
I just finished watching Pierce Brosnan in Murder 101... a MUCH better whodunit set on the campus scene... Great turns at every turn with a surprise ending even after the surprise! And the context is better than a criminology class, much more believable than the usual Dyke and Barry Van Dyke show (which parallels the Diagnosis Murder TV whodunit show which ALSO stars Dick Van Dyke as the sleuth and his son Barry as the constable detective!) The comment here that THIS TV Murder 101 is a bit of a cheesy crime solver is, unfortunately, true, and I think I liked the characters a LITTLE better in Diagnosis Murder! The BEST way to find out about the Brosnan TV movie Murder 101 is to look up Pierce Brosnan here on IMDb and look up his filmography.
