War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave (2008)
H G Wells would be turning in his grave!
When I first saw this, I couldn't believe it! War of the Worlds, from the book, the radio drama and the original '53 movie is classic, in every respect of the word. I'm not a huge fan of the Spielberg remake, to be honest, it would have been so much better setting it in the 'Victorian' era, but I digress.
WOTW 2 is terrible, I mean, truly awful. The acting is some of the worst I have seen. The directing isn't that bad, but it's nothing special. The SFX are terrible...I've see TV adverts with better effects! The story seemed to be from a junior school competition.
This really is an insult to H G Wells...he would be rolling in his grave over this. Avoid it at all costs.
The Hive (2008)
A very good non-comedy funny movie.
I'm giving this a 5 coz it did make me laugh out loud on a number of occasions.
The basic plot, killer ants. It sounded like the kind of cheap sci-fi B-movie I like, so I though I would watch it. And I was entertained for all the wrong reasons.
The acting was OK, not the worst I've seen, but I've seen a LOT better. The story was ridiculous! I mean, even to the point where; you know in Bond movies, how the bad guys does a plot exposition to Bond? Well, the 'ants' do this to the good guys of the movie...yes, the 'ants' actually tell the humans what they want! I'll not tell you how, but it is ridiculous! It made me laugh out loud.
The direction was taken from the 'how to film every camera cliché in the book' school of filming.
The end was really disappointing. They try to have a 'twist' ending, but it's more of a 'we couldn't be bothered to think of anything, so we'll resort to an obvious answer' ending.
After I saw this, I read a review that said this film has 'credibility', lol, really, it's only credible if you've never seen the 'moving image' before. If you like B-movies, that make you laugh, then you will enjoy this. If you're looking for a sci-fi/horror/action film, then this isn't for you.
They Wait (2007)
Average horror flick
I like horror, and horror in the true sense of being scared by a movie. This had a few jumps in it, but nothing terrifying.
The main problem with it was the story. It was very, very all over the place. You're not sure if it's a monster movie, a ghost story or a horror film. And it keeps you guessing right up till the end...and I'm still not sure.
If the story had been written well, the film would have been good. The acting was not bad, nothing outstanding. The direction was again, OK, a few good moments are spoilt by a few bad ones.
Watch it late at night, with the lights off, you'll most likely enjoy it. Just try not to follow the plot too closely, coz it's not a very good one.
