A House on the Bayou (2021)
Interesting
You never know what to expect with this type of movie. I didn't catch it from the beginning but I thought I'd check it out. When I saw Lia McHugh, I knew that I'd seen her in something before. Turns out she happens to be in a little film called The Eternals. I had seen that a couple of weeks before in the theater and I walked out. Not because of her, although I didn't really care for her character in that. In this movie, she looks and acts quite different, and is about the only one that I thought did a decent job (except maybe for the actor who played Issac).
As for the story, it was a little confusing but it kept my interest to the end. And because of the way it ended, I hope that there will be a sequel.
The Bad Seed (2018)
Pretty Poor
Okay, I only was able to see the last 40 minutes of the movie (and I haven't seen the original), but I just had to make this comment and I don't know where else to do it.
Her father brings two cups of hot chocolate into her room. While he's gone (as she tells him later) she switches them so that he would get the one that is drugged. How could she possibly know which one it was, or which one he was going to give her?
I do like the actress McKenna Grace, so I was hoping it would be better than it is.
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
What did I just watch??
I'm not trying to get all racial here, but I figured the director/writer must be black (like Get Out) because it ends with a black guy living like a millionaire and just getting away with robbery. What kind of message does that send? Him giving some of the loot to the cop's wife doesn't make the crime okay.
And that's just one stupid thing in the movie.
I wouldn't have watched it if it wasn't for Mel Gibson. I don't know why he would do this movie.
Look Away (2018)
Interesting concept that went nowhere
First, the positive: I thought India Eisley did a very good job playing the dual role. I was surprised - but not surprised - to find out that her mother is Olivia Hussey.
The movie seems to have some plot holes. In the first half, it's not too hard to sympathize with the lead character, but in the second half, there's not really any character to connect with - except for the one who's "stuck in the mirror" (and maybe the mother).
How can it be that no one questioned the fact that her personality took a complete 180? Even before that, she should have been seeing a therapist. And it's certainly not because they couldn't afford it.
Why would her "friend" all of a sudden be so afraid of her that she starts running (or skating) away? Why would she kill her lover just because he was going to talk to the police? Where did she get enough strength to hit him and her bully hard enough? Why would she throw away the scalpel instead of putting it in his hand? And why end the movie without her getting any consequences of her actions? So many questions. And it didn't end in a way where there could be a possible sequel (unless I'm just not creative enough to come up with a "reasonable" scenario).
Elvis Lives! (2016)
What the...? Why would they...?
Why does it say "Biography, Drama" for genres here?? Seems more like a comedy. And it's definitely not a biography. It's more of a fantasy (at least the last part). And the acting is atrocious. Enough said.
Mother! (2017)
Not great but not terrible.
Apparently, looking at the reviews, either you hate it or love it. I've never seen so many 1/10s. I'm one of the very few in the middle. I didn't read anything about the film before watching it on demand. I figured it was another ghost-type movie. When I watched it, I thought there must be some deeper meaning, but I didn't think it would be Biblically-based, but now that I know, I can see it - somewhat. It definitely could have been better, but it was mostly interesting and enjoyable to watch. I just think the analogy should have been clearer.
Brimstone (2016)
Anti-Christian Agenda?
I always hate it when a movie or television episode portrays a "religious" person as being demented (like in Carrie, for example), and misquotes the Bible, saying that it says they can mistreat people. And then when some people see that, it reinforces their belief that Christians are bad and the Bible tells people to do bad things. And this one is one of the worst that I've seen (if not the worst). One of the main reasons I wanted to see the movie was because Dakota Fanning is in it. But I knew that she was raised as a Southern Baptist, so she would have known that the way the script was written went against proper scriptural meaning. But, maybe she was denouncing her Christian upbringing and was more interested in having a leading role. She did a decent job as a troubled mute, but the writing and content overwhelms any good acting and scenery.
One positive thing I can say about it is that I liked that it was in parts because it made it easier to watch it in two nights.
