I loved the first half of the first season, but the show lost its way in the second half. The drama became overblown and the bad guys were too one-dimensional. A more easygoing episodic format would work better to show the strengths of the likable lead characters, and take advantage of the premise of Liv's personality changing with each brain she eats.
Six Feet Under and Dead Like Me worked best when each new episode was fun in its own right and mostly standalone. Even Veronica Mars worked well that way -- sometimes Veronica just rescued the school mascots. Here the creators were trying too hard to shoehorn in the scheduled pieces of dramatic arc and forgot to make each episode fun in its own right.
Just dial it back a notch and relax!
