Why didn't they just stop after Superman 3?
17 June 2013
Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers* Just saw Superman 6 starring Kevin Costner. One of the biggest ever box office hits for June is also one of the worst.

However it starts off quite emotional really, for the first half hour, making you feel for the characters, (although for some reason Superman has to be topless to introduce himself).

It then decides to become really boring for no apparent reason, and takes itself really seriously. The Superman series has always had quite a few jokes in, but you'll find none here. Actually you'll find 3 in the whole film, which aren't really jokes! Let me know if you find more, 1. Army girl smiles and says "he's hot" 2. Superman remembers a kid who bullied him at school and he's now a 'loser who works in a cafe'. 3. A polar bear jumps for no explicable reason and makes a grrr noise as it does so.

With the film deciding to take itself very seriously it tells Superman not to use his Superman powers in case people lose their faith in God. To counteract this we see Superman in church talking to a vicar (they seem to forget this is just a film). So because of this, Superman decides to let good old step dad Kevin Costner die.

Half the emotional impact from a superman film comes from him saving people, but I think they decided to just put all that in the first half hour. I guess the other half came from the John Williams soundtrack, but that's not here either.

Finally the bad guys come down to get Superman. Zod wants to destroy everyone on Earth and make a new Krypton here. But it will be OK won't it because Superman is here?!?! Wrong.

The rest of the film is just scenes of thousands of people dying whilst buildings and cars collapse on them. Superman is not featured on screen whilst this happens and the last 2/3 of the film is devoted entirely to the good old US army/airforce fighting the bad guys. Really, this is a Superman film without Superman. The camera zooms in Saving Private Ryan style endlessly and makes you watch quite upsetting scenes.

But Superman will just reverse time won't he? No he won't, they will all just die and the whole thing feels a little unsettling.

Superman finally starts to fight along with the US army (because of course, immortal Superman needs them) and the screen is just filled with quite upsetting violence with no emotional resonance for any thing on screen. The soundtrack of punches, headbutts and kicks is really loud too, suddenly, it's not Superman at all, but something no one is enjoying. As this is happening you start becoming upset, but not for Superman, or the civilians on screen, but for the millions upon millions wasted on the special effects in this movie whilst you feel no emotion but sorrow for the billions that Hollywood has. Earth suffers because of this movie.

By the time we see one news reporter girl trapped, you don't really care anymore, everyone else is already dead and you're very bored. In case you used to like Clark Kent working at the Daily Planet, he doesn't in this film, apart from 5 seconds at the end. excellent.

You then care about nothing and have no affection toward any character on screen, including Lois Lane, and you're just hoping it's time to leave the cinema. However Superman has to have his final one on one with Zod, both cliché, short and violent.

Then for no reason... a family is huddled in a corner and Superman is trying to stop Zod burning them to death with his eyes. However Superman fails AGAIN, and the family with young child dies. So Superman decides to SNAP ZOD'S NECK.

THE END.

Please do not see this movie.

P.S This film has the worst product placement in history, and I don't usually notice these things. You'll have to excuse me now while I go out and buy a Nikkon camera.

a good B movie
24 February 2011
Despite a low budget and mediocre acting with blue screen effects that make you laugh, this movie is actually quite good. Not many movies these days are actually scary. In an age where sawing someone's head in two makes people yawn, it seems time to bring back some old fashioned scares.

Based on the legendary Winchester house this movie provided those old school thrills with very little gory violence. The threat is consistent and sustained allowing the viewer to feel threatened where other horror movies would back off. Despite all the negative aspects to the film it is enjoyable to watch and the fact it is so cheap actually helps. Hollywood often gloss over horror making it unscary, this goes the whole way to provide good entertainment.

a worthwhile watch

Seaman (1999 Video Game)

Excellent
27 April 2009
It came with a microphone. It was on the Dreamcast. It featured Leonard Nimoy and a talking fish man who asked you if you were having an affair! sounds like a hit! Not many people got to play this...

It is a very clever AI title responding to various speech patterns and limited joy pad instructions. You raise Seaman up from an egg to the grotesque creation he becomes whilst he asks about your private life along the way. The best kind of virtual pet.

It's a very good game, and if anyone is interested I'll tell you what happens at the end! I made it through! :)

let your imagination take over
2 August 2006
A real family tear jerker, with great amounts of comedy thrown in for good measure. Peter Falk takes his grandson on a journey back through his own imagination and allows him and his own son to follow suit. This movie is mainly about family issues and how in the end our own mortality is what will make you want to resolve them. Father and son (Tim Daly and Josh Hutcherson) realise what it is to stay in tune with your own imagination and not lose yourself in the material trappings of the modern world. It really is a much deeper movie than it lets on. Although a TV movie from 2003, this came out on DVD last year, and looks very much like a motion picture. I recommend it to all. It is a joy to see Peter Falk acting so well - and like somebody mentioned - it seems like an extension of his role in the Princess Bride. I'll be watching this again at the weekend :)

What happened?
17 July 2006
I thought this was going to be great. The return of Superman. After all how could it fail to beat Superman IV: The Quest For Peace? I don't grumble at every movie that is released, but the story and plot were confused and made little sense. Little emotion was conveyed through the characters and an original John Williams score absent. (John Ottman filling in for him). It does have some good special effects but with a budget this huge, you'd expect it. It has a missing charm and magic, perhaps that was the late Christopher Reeve. The cast feel too young. One of the elder actors, Kevin Spacey, did a good job as Lex Luthor though, very menacing, if a little camp. But hey, that's what Superman is.

"See you in 20 years said Superman at the end of Quest For Peace"

Well it's been 19, I could have held out for 20.

don't be fooled...not a dull romantic comedy
12 July 2006
The DVD box cover in the UK would suggest it is! This is a great action comedy with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks providing some very amusing laughs along with the rest of the cast. It's not a dull romantic comedy that drags on too long! Ryan Reynolds is under used, but as a whole this movie moved fast and I was entertained. This comment is really to say watch this movie if you're not too serious of a thinker because you'll probably enjoy it! I was discouraged from watching it for a long time because of reviews on IMDb! Although a little older Michael Douglas was great in the 'James Bond' role.

Not that bad!
23 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Randy Quaid is given an all paid family vacation to a tropical island after being bitten by a lab monkey - let chaos ensue. People would have you believe this is the worst movie ever. If you truly love the Vacation movies, you'll probably like this, if only for the fact it's kept the franchise alive, plus some of the old cast are there. Sadly if you're looking for Chevy, he is not to be found, and I have no idea why.

There is some laughs to be had amongst the dodgy effects. The acting is only bad because everyone has to ham up their role. I laughed a fair few times and I've seen a lot of bad movies. This wouldn't go on my black list at all, in fact I'd watch it again.

But don't expect it to look as good or be as funny as any prior Vacation movie, after all this was just a TV movie with a low budget. It's now available on DVD with a making of.
