Mean Girls (2024)
Worth a look
Mean Girls is a good musical comedy film that is a remake and an adaptation from the broadway musical which has lots of energy and fun. The original film was fun and had a great cast ensemble. You may have a few cameos from the original.
This film is fun. The opening scene of following two characters sharing a video on social media as they discuss there story. And than following Cady moving from Kenya to U. S. feeling left out and trying to fit in high school. Until she meets Regina and her queen bee friends.
The cast ensemble is great. You ll see each character standing out. The musical sequences are over the top and fun. The film has some humor but some of it does seem plain and awkwardly forced.
Overall, it is a fun film and it is different and energetic compared to the original.
Year of the Dog (2007)
Excellent
"Year of the Dog" is by no means a Hollywood movie. No "perfect" characters here. No "perfect" story. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Hollywood movie. By all means, bring on the popcorn! We do, indeed, need that sort of entertainment in this day and age. I truly love it!
I'm just saying that this film is another breed altogether. "Year of the Dog" deals with situations, realities, and characters one might actually encounter in real life.
This film is brilliant in that it doesn't take sides. An animal lover (like myself) can watch it, and feel fulfilled and amused. A non-animal-lover (unlike myself) can likewise watch it, and feel fulfilled and amused.
Quite a tightrope writer/director Mr. White has created for himself. . .and completely succeeded at traversing. Bravo sir!
It's ultimately a story about how different sorts of people find a way of dealing with the painful events in their lives.
The actors are all on top form (particularly Regina King, Molly Shannon, Laura Dern, Josh Pais, and Peter Saarsgard--not to mention all the beautiful animals).
One could view this story as an exploration of "Dysfunction in modern America". Or, one could view this story as an exploration of "How to deal with dysfunction in modern America".
Take your pick...
The Good Girl (2002)
Great performances
After watching the Good Girl, I now know why Jennifer Aniston was getting a lot of praise. I'm surprised she didn't get an Oscar nomination. She was very good in this because the character is nothing like her character from Friends, and she was very convincing as the bored wife in a small town who hates her job and is depressed by her stoner husband. But, I have to say her accent was not very good. Why do these actors who have never lived in the south think everyone sounds like some slow hick.
This movie is a lot more entertaining than you think just from a quick synopsis of the plot. Justine starts an affair with a young co-worker who becomes obsessed with her and turns out being mentally disturbed. The decision she makes at the end about turning left or turning right was just well written and directed. And the movie does have light laughs with the blackberries when Justing decides to buy some for Holden. And the fact her husband is always stoned with his buddy, Bubba, watching TV. But, the part where Bubba blackmails Justine into sleeping with him was just creepy because her husband is his best friend. I just didn't get that part because I don't think the character would have done that.
FINAL VERDICT: I recommend this. Don't be fooled because it doesn't have a bunch of explosions and gun fights. It is very good and a lot more entertaining than most films.
Dial M for Murder (1954)
Still Tense
I had forgotten that most if not all of it happens in one single room. The planning of it is a display of extraordinary craftsmanship. Not a lagging moment. I was riveted to the, let's face it, preposterous plot from beginning to end. Ray Milland is a credible monster in elegant and civilized clothing. Grace Kelly, a peach as the unfaithful wife who stays home to cut newspaper clippings of her husband's past glories. Yeah, right. Robert Cummings has always been a mystery to me. A popular leading man with a long career. He only exudes a campy, if lightweight vibe that almost works in comedies and when he's in a supporting role - My Geisha and What A Way To Go with Shirley MacLaine are good examples. Here as Grace Kelly's secret lover, I don't know what to say. John Williams. Very funny again as the Scotland Yard inspector, the same character to a T he played in Midnight Lace with Doris Day or was it his twin brother? In any case, no Hitchcock fan can afford to miss this filmed play, filmed by one of the undisputed greats.
Sherlock (2010)
Excellent
One word to describe this show..'excellent'. A true master piece. I am a huge fan of the original Sherlock Holmes books and TV shows. When I sat down to watch this, at the first glimpse I was a bit disappointed. The show started in a somewhat different way than I imagined. Few minutes later, I found out that the 'difference' I experienced is what makes this series unique and brilliant. The cast is spot on. Couldn't have picked a better guy for Holmes or Lestrade. Yet, Dr. Watson doesn't match the original picture. Who cares hey? The story is full of twists and turns and fascinating to see the techniques of deduction. The merging of old reasoning and new technology has been done magnificently. So, its a Holmes with a laptop and a smart phone.that who we see.and that can be easily related than those 1800's detective.
The Good Place (2016)
Adore this show
This show is so sweet with a great message and the quirkiest of quirky characters. The world, the actors, the stories are everything I love about Television.
I'm sure I'm Not alone in wishing there were more episodes, seasons, and one liners.
Many, Danson, Kristen all shine and flourish in this setting which I recently saw on vacation on the universal tram tour.
I'm hoping all the creative people behind this get together in a new project or a spin off somehow.
Could we maybe get a Good Place movie this year? Please?
Who do I write to about that?
Thank you again for giving viewers a good place to go.
Shimmer Lake (2017)
A solid 10
Shimmer Lake is a solid 10 for me. I wish they would make more or turn it into a series.
I think this movie doesn't get enough love and I'm not sure why.
All the characters are great, the doctors at the rope of their game, and how it's put together is just masterful IMO.
What makes it even more great is me you finish it the first time, it plays really well in second watch as you pick up things you missed the first time. Similar to how I felt watching the sixth sense a second and third time.
I don't know if there's a sequel or any plans for more, but please tell your friends about this so we can get the interest up.
Poker Face (2023)
Refreshing
I love how we see the murder at the beginning of each episode so we can see how they are covering up their tracks as they go.
I also love Lyonne's character being anything but perfect as she finds herself always ending up at the scene of a murder no matter how far she tries to get away from that first one. She is sort of like blue collar Monk or Castle.
We definitely need a season 3 as well for this and the cliffhanger of season one puts us in a fun new direction for season 2.
And More celeb cameos throughout please.
Kudos to all the people involved with this show as we all patiently wait for the next season premiere.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Lots of laughs
Like Martin Short in Only Murders in the Building, I too have an uncomfortable relationship with dips haha.
Love these two together on and off screen and Selena plays well off of them As a voice of reason and to remind them of their age.
The mysteries themselves are great but it's the characters and one liners that keep me coming back to This show.
I cannot WAIT for season 4 and 5 and 6. Hopefully steve Martin doesn't decide to retire earlier than that. Steve, do not do that to us please!
Have enjoyed all their press they've been doing together and I get a sense that they are both like this with each other in real life.
Make more of these as soon as possible.
CrimeTime: Freefall (2024)
Unexpected and lovely
I didn't expect so many laughs in this one.
Hadley as the Hollywood actress moving to small town and having a hard time adjusting at first drew the most fun on this one for me.
All of the characters were really different and quirky with weird lovable ways.
I also loved her trying to find out just not the mystery but detectives secret. Don't worry I won't spoil it.
The back and forth between her and the cop had me smiling all the way up until their last lines. They're hopefully going to end up together of course but when? Knowing hallmark and murder she baked we may have some waiting to do.
But not too long okay?
A Christmas Story (1983)
Classic Christmas
Everything about this show reminds me of the wonderful childhood I was fortunate to have. Such innocent times then.
Everyone we knew lived in houses similar to the one shown. I also remember being bundled up in my snowsuit everyday to get to school. Didn't have "snow days" back then.
When I was watching this a few years ago, my boyfriend kept saying he wanted a leg lamp like Raphie's dad had. Ugh.
I secretly looked online and found a smaller version (24 inches) of it. He was thrilled. Doesn't take much to make him happy. 😄.
He also remembers getting his mouth washed out with soap lol. It's not Christmas without this movie!
When Calls the Heart: The Greatest Christmas Blessing (2018)
So much love
Yay my first review. Apologies in advance if I gush to much about this show I've come to love. Bare with me,
I loved every part of this movie. It shows the power of love and how a community can support each other no matter what the circumstances.
We need more of this message now more than ever. Come together y'all!!
You are a talented Erin Krakow.
The rest of the cast is equally amazing and brought tears to my eyes.
