Our Flag Means Death: Wherever You Go, There You Are (2022)
So so good
The finale of this show managed to balance the heartbreak while still being super funny and fun to watch, and I'm in awe of that. Mary being so deeply likable is one of my favorite things about this season - I think a lot of shows would have casually made her the villain. Ed's interrupted healing journey tears my heart out - he was sad but he was *trying* and I found that very relatable. This episode, and particularly the ending of it, is brutal but a perfect set-up for what is to come in season 2. I've never seen a season of television like this one and they deserve every award there is for achieving it.
Our Flag Means Death: Act of Grace (2022)
Gorgeous
Where to even begin. Ed and Stede have understood each other so well about certain things from the beginning - they have probably never felt so understood by another person. But there is still so much they haven't talked about and learned about each other, and that all comes to a head here. The way their respective insecurities run up against each other, and they simply don't have a chance to hash it out, is so real and so heartbreaking. I wish either of them could have done things differently, but also, their actions are so in character that of course they had to happen this way. Completely stunning episode.
Our Flag Means Death: Discomfort in a Married State (2022)
Oh so this is gonna be GAY gay
This episode, beginning with Ed watching over Stede's bedside as he experiences nightmarish flashbacks from his old life, contains some of my favorite moments. Ed introducing himself to Stede is such a big one - he's a character that probably hasn't introduced himself to literally anyone in years and this novel experience is his first inkling that Stede is going to be different. His fascination and chemistry with Stede is immediate and obvious - the two of them talking like peers, even though their lives are completely different. There's something so special about watching 2 characters who have never really been understood by people around them, but who are just starting to trust and discover in someone new who might, maybe possibly, seem to like them for who they are. <3.
Our Flag Means Death: Pilot (2022)
Immediately loved every character
The introduction of each individual character - Jim's fake identity, Swede's goofy accent and naivete, Pete's macho man persona, Lucius telling Stede he's the only one who has borrowed books because he's the only one who can read - immediately makes them all unique, likable, and people I want to know more about. I think "I'll be your robber here today" was the line that brought me on board with the show as a whole - Rhys as Stede has this combination of being somewhat of a spoiled clueless buffoon, but he's lovable anyway because you can tell he genuinely cares about the people around him. He wants to know their interests, he wants them to be happy. Perfect pilot to a perfect season.
