Leave the World Behind (2023)
Future cult movie because it's stupid?
If enough young people watch this show, they will find it so comedic that it will become a cult classice 20 years from now. If only it was a musical! Perhaps it will be one day, on Broadway. Anyhow, like so many other reviews say, this movie starts out like, "Oh, this is going to be good!" But that is the last time you will think that. The music, dialogue and sparse special effects keep egging you on to think that, but don't be fooled. It ain't gonna happen. One of the most striking things in this movie is Julia Roberts using the F word like nobody's business, which is both amusing and surprising. This is honestly one of the few movies I every genuinely felt like I wasted my time.
All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Typical UK-type melodrama.
I did not read the book. I made it through all 4 episodes, so gave it a 7 for being able to do that. I liked Hugh Laurie and the actress that played the blind girl. Other than that, it seemed like one of those Hallmark movies they make at Christmastime. When I say it was typical UK, everyone and everything is neat and tidy, except of course the war scenes and bombed out buildings. Always plenty of food, everyone is clean, well-dressed. Not fancy dress, but well-put-together styles. The acting was very typical of the UK productions with the "good" people being smart yet warmhearted. The characters always just happen to find transportation, or food or some stroke of luck to survive. Mark Ruffalo was calling it in. I swear the scene where he is walking out of Paris with his daughter, he is looking at cue cards when talking to her. I recommend this only to fill in on a rainy Sunday afternoon when you need some background noise.
Bushcraft Build-Off (2017)
Men contestants and jewelry.
Are the male contestants and their helpers required to wear multiple necklaces, bracelets and patterned scarves? I mean, the women are wearing stuff that, to me, is a little odd for survivalists in the bush , such as red lipstick and dangle earrings, but they are women. I watched this because I like this kind of show, but it is pretty much on the lower rung of 'survival' type shows. The second episode "High and Mighty" is a really good example of the male adornments, with at least two necklaces, and numerous scarves, both on the heads and around the neck. I also wish they would explain where they are that they can just hack up perfectly good trees to build an ultimately unneeded shelter.
Alone (2015)
Season 10 starting to lapse
I just finished watching Season 10 of Alone. As usual, it was an excellent show, compared to other survival type offerings. I don't know if this season's location (Saskatchewan, Canada) was what made it different, but there was so much blabbering on and on about people's personal lives and hard luck stories and feelings, as compared to other years. Just an introductory preview of the contestants is all that is needed. We don't need to see people sitting in tents moaning about how much they miss people. Didn't they know the family wasn't coming with them? Perhaps there just wasn't enough action in hunting, fishing and generally surviving to fill in the time. But please stop with the personal sob stories.
Alone Australia (2023)
Did I miss something?
As an avid viewer of the Alone series, I was, as so many other here, looking forward to the Australian version. In the first or second episode, one of the contestants was already crying over missing his family and also sipping a hot drink as if he hadn't had any liquid nor heat for weeks. I wondered if I had missed something that happened, but, no, I didn't. After reading a number of reviews by Australians, I want to assure you that I know this isn't the "real you." Where they got the contestants from is a mystery to me. I'm sure there will be a weeding out, and it will get better, Right? Looking forward to more episodes.
The Diplomat (2023)
It's like work, watching this.
I think it is pretty well-understood that movies and tv shows are supposed to be entertaining, escapism, relaxation or titi;lation. This series is none of those things. Started off pretty well, but I could barely get past the second episode. It was very hard to follow and needed total concentration to even attempt to figure out what was happening. Weird things would pop up, like body odor, dirty hair, crummy clothing, laying on stone steps, kidnapping and throw in a quirky marriage, or divorce, or whatever is going on. The main character is rather snide and nasty to everyone she comes in contact with and appears to have not bathed for weeks, which is distracting. I tried get into this. My husband and I both watched some of it. He is struggling to get through the fourth episode and tells me it does not improve, so no more wasting my time on it.
