Money No Enough 3 (2024)
Jack neo's collection of jokes
When I watch Jack neo's movies, I'm mostly looking for a laugh and relevant topics related to living in Singapore. It used to be authentic with cast that speaks like they are having a conversation in real life.
Nowadays, watching his movies of the decade is like going through his library of tired jokes. Mostly rehashed and often reenacted from his previous movies, with some taken from the internet and the remaining involving puns created by him. It's cringy to watch the casts go "blrggh, I mean xxx instead" 5 times or more in one movie. It seems like a direction and writing issue rather than actor's skill.
I understand the need to also include dialect, but the usage in this movie was so forceful that it's hard to feel like they are really having a conversation.
A 2 hour movie with constant flashback which I've already watched 15minutes ago are pointless reminders. I felt like I was watching a 4 hour movie.
I really wanted to like local shows. I hope someday local movies can bring the nostalgia back.
The Devil on Trial (2023)
Lower grade movie with some good truths
The first 3/4 of the show was made like a movie, including some scar factors, it was like watching the conjuring movie that was amateurish. Ed warren actor had a cast that looked exactly like him, which was a plus. The acting was pretty ok and watchable. Pacing was pretty much here and there with some unintended funny scenes and sound effects.
The truths included what actually happened from a third perspective, which was something that has never been shown elsewhere(not that I know of). People who believed in the original story would probably hate it.
Overall I had a good lunch watching this.
Army of Thieves (2021)
Using the worst possible character from the first movie
In the original movie army of the dead, Ludwig was one of the worst character, it tries too hard to be funny, overact and fails miserably. Now, while the overall story of this movie is better than the first, the emphasis and portrayal of Ludwig made it barely watchable. There are interesting moments as there are times where I cringed at Ludwig's forced performance.
Zack Snyder is good at the vfx department but he can't direct casts and write meaningful lines, there were too much one liners that made no sense. In my opinion he should stop creating movies and go back to focusing on visual effects.
