The Empress (2022)
Disappointing, if you have the wrong expectations.
The negative: the series is often compared to the Crown. It would be true, IF the Crown was played by American actors and actresses, in American English and the filming location wouldn't be London. So there you have a film about historical characters, which are taken entirely out of their environment and context.
The positive: court period pieces are often very romantic, rarely you see the people outside the court. This is done well here. It shows the misery of the working class during the industrial revolution and growing miscontent towards royalty.
In short, it is a piece of fiction, more comparable to Bridgerton than the Crown. Which is fine, just be aware that it is in no way historically accurate.

Dark, suspenseful and clever
One of the better shows I have recently seen! Very clever plot. As you start watching the viewer starts with the same knowledge as the protagonist and discovers more facts throughout the show, in parallel. Nicely done! Good acting! Can't wait for season 2!
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker (2020)
Why the dramatisation
It is clear in the movie that Addie Munroe is a portrait of the real life figure of Annie Malone, Madam CJ Walker's mentor. Why is she portrayed so negatively? In real life she was a successful business woman alongside CJ Walker, philanthropist and equal rights advocate. Is there really no space for 2 successful business women alongside each other? It is a pity that something marketed as a biography has such a major misrepresentation. Otherwise it was a good movie. Interesting contrasts between the old time setting and modern music and scenes.
