Chappaquiddick (2017)
This Movie Should not Exist
This film was released around same time as several other negative portrayals of the Kennedy's were released. Instead of exploring what is probably a more complex event than meets the eye, it is just a vindictive, boring retelling of anti-Kennedy talking point. There is no evidence that Mary Jo was pregnant, nor that the Senator killed her. The Kennedy's had girlfriends, but they are not killers. Was Kopechne Teddy's girlfriend? If you believe what you read in the papers. In fact, even if assume Ted would kill someone for which he had no motive, the what was the meaning of this? Dr. Cyrillic Wecht that the evidence shows Ted could not have been driving the car. He thinks Ted got out after seeing police, fearing he would be stopped by them and they would think he was having an affair or something. I do not know why he incriminate himself, but I agree with Wecht. As far as Ted supposedly telling Joe Gargan to lie, well he would not have to have him lie. All he would have to do, if he was really driving the car, is tell the media and the cops she was. That is, if the Kennedy's were really that corrupt as this shoddy craftsmanship would have you believe. Anti-Kennedy propaganda. As far as Kennedy losing 1980 Democratic Presidential primary, that was only because the country briefly rallied behind Carter for an Iran Hostage Crisis that he indirectly caused, by granting sanctuary to the Shah after he was ousted by a revolution. The Shah by the way had a terrible record on human rights.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
One of the Finest Pictures I have seen in years! And Thank God it was a Western!
The fact that it is a true story adds to the compelling and complex nature of this film. It is a throwback to the western epics, such as The Searchers that Martin Scorsese enjoyed as a young man. As Ernest Burkhart Leonardo Dicaprio gives the performance of his career. The only other movie star to grace the screen that I can see playing such an easily duped character with such rich internal complexity would be the late Steve McQueen. Lilly Gladstone is very interesting to watch and brings a proverbial light to Mollie that only she could. Robert DeNiro is playing an evil Southerner, but it is much more nuanced than his performance as Max Cady, so he reminds us of why he's Robert DeNiro and avoids falling into the trap of playing a caricature of evil. It's just an excellent story and film. I loved Jesse Plemmons as Tom White. The set design, costumes, direction, and screenplay are all amazing. People complaining about the length of the motion picture, I do not understand what they're complaining about, I would have watched a five-hour version.
Highway to Heaven: The Silent Bell (1989)
Excellent message! Exactly as it is! Ahead of its time!
Michael Landon apparently realized that just because a non-profit organization, a nursery school operated by a church, in this particular episode of this fine show, are separate from the particular church itself, unless stated otherwise. Believe it or not, there are Christian churches out there, that do operate non-profits not as proselytizing devices. Mike, correctly though that the trend at that time and its true today was to convert these organizations into indoctrination facilities, rather than charities of love and tolerance. Even the dialog is accurate. For example, when the stiff shows up and says, "Ah, Mark! Fine Christian name." and Mark replies, "Mm. Well, I was named after Mark Twain, wrote Huckelberry Finn." Almost exactly something I heard today in real life. It reminds me of the message from a season one episode "Child of God". Particularly the line, "A man once asked me, would I rather face an Atheist with a gun or a Christian? Of course, I told him I would rather face neither. But you see what the man was really saying was that because the one man said he was a Christian, and the other man was an Atheist, is that because the one man said he was a Christian that automatically made him better than the man who said he was an Atheist. Is that true? Or is that just a judgment?
