Maneater (2022)
What and why?
Poorly written, cast, shot, directed...I could not find one single thing positive to say about the movie. Seriously how these godddddawful movies keep getting produced is beyond my comprehension. It wasn't thrilling, scary or remotely entertaining...yet I watched it because I love shark movies. This, however was so dumb and pointless. I wouldn't even go as far as to say it was mediocre. The film editing was bad. Honestly I was surprised to see Shane West in a film like this. The fact that they have a country music artist as a main character really says everything. Complete garbaaaage! I'm glad I didn't pay money for this.
Countdown (2019)
Discount Final Destination
Title says it all. A modern take on final destination but way less deaths, not as creative execution, not nearly as exciting. Super predictable too. I expected a lot more bc the trailer is pretty creepy and captivating however this would have been 10 times better as a short film instead of a full length feature.
Vivarium (2019)
Good Idea Underdeveloped
This movie showed up in a couple of horror blogs I follow. I had never heard of the movie but it was new and looked different and creative. First of all I need to say this was a sci-fi thriller missing any real horror elements. There were many missed opportunities for a darker turn into the horror realm but I feel the producers were going for a different vibe. It was not scary however it was weird and interesting. I'd say for the most part the movie had a great concept but ultimately was produced before it had time to properly simmer in the brainstorm of the writers and become balanced. I liked the eerie style and loved the use of color. It reminded me of the classic days of Tim Burton films before Disney ruined him and let CGI rule his movies. Overall the movie has a lot of build up but the climax comes crashing down to an abrupt stop just as things are starting to be revealed. The film's arc was bent in a way that there was so much slow build up then suddenly too many things happening at once. Before we could indulge in all the crazy new twists the characters give up and we are left with so many questions.
Vivarium was a captivating title and it perfectly describes the couples experience. I had never heard of the word so I had to look it up. If it weren't for the opening bird sequence the movie would have left even more loose ends. Some people like movies with a bit more mystery (Donnie Darko Theatrical vs Director Cut). I want an explanation of the why, when, and how because so many of those details are completely left out like the director expects us to not ask these important questions. I read one review that gave this a 9/10 and they were clearly full of their own BS. This was not a deep thought-provoking art film about the fear of starting a family and falling into societies standards; but it tried. If you want a dark artsy film watch Under The Skin. This felt like Black Mirror and Twilight Zone had a lovechild but abandoned it mid term.
