Kathal: A Jackfruit Mystery (2023)
The Title is a CLICK BAIT...please don't waste your time
I was expecting comedy and mystery/thriller from this one, that was my first impression before I watched it...and what I got is...a screen play written by Chat GPT!!!
Well, FYI do you really think there's any mystery about that KATHAL?
Many things went wrong in here....very loose writing....poorly chosen back ground score....etc etc
Yes you can call it a social satire, but in the backdrop of so many other recent Indian movies, it might give you an impression that you just saw an on-stage (satirical) drama performance with a set of characters with all having huge footage/on-stage time, yet that can't make you identify/relate with any of the characters; except maybe I'm not sure you may like only the main character (Sanya Malhotra), talking in terms of relating or identifying a character as the movie runs.
And this social satire POV fails to leave much of an impact, it's so poorly written. In fact this movie can become an interesting film project for students, who will keep finding flaws in the writing. Given the matter what the film-makers really wanted to portray, and how the script totally blew that up.
And the idea of throwing in feminism every now and then, will appear repetitive and boring, and not at all impactful !!!
Writers certainly wanted to make the dialogues and events funny, but that was a disaster.
Acting, except for the protagonist, is ideally run-of-the-mill, but the Sanya Malhotra (protagonist) with all her skills didn't get much of a chance to brew some movie-magic. But there's an teenage girl in the movie, though she hasn't got much footage, but you may like her acting the BEST among all the actors in the movie.
This is not so high budget movie, as are some other good Indian movies released directly on Netfix, BUT I'm not complaining about that. If you wade through OTT platforms for Indian movies directly released there, I'm sure you will find some really good ones which are "low-budget".
To sum up: If you are really in a mood to watch out something, take my word - you should skip this one!!!
Mafia Mamma (2023)
Toni Collette totally wasted...strongly DON'T recommend this movie!
Stopped watching it mid way. I didn't understand what the makers are up to...crime/comedy/thriller/action/slasher??? Well, they have rights to mix everything in a movie package...but here the package is empty!!!...when I felt this is a mismatched jumble of sequences and every sequence resembles some poorly written soap opera (I'm not complaining about the budget though...there are many substantial movies with not-so-high budgets)...and this is when I stopped watching this one.
No spoilers...as the movie starts, ideally a watcher doesn't have an idea where it's going...now there comes a scene (in the beginning), I was kinda thinking...what's going on? And how do I take this? Is that a sad revelation in the protagonist's life or a twist in the drama, or something intriguing will unfold...with what happens immediately after, literally forced me to believe "oh, I'm actually watching a comedy"...but that wasn't "comedy" and maybe (since I couldnt complete the movie) the whole thing is "pathetic". I'm punning with this latter word on a dialogue in the movie that was supposed to make the entire sequence funny, but actually that's the real one word review of this one.
And FYI I'm not someone with very sophisticated taste about movies.
U Turn (2023)
One time watch sitting on your couch is QUITE OK!!! Provided you haven't seen the originals and don't know this is a remake.
I have no idea why users are trashing this movie in their reviews. This movie is nothing outstanding, but will worth your time for about 1 hr 40 mins. However be cautious to watch it if you have kids along, because of some dialogues in the beginning (which makes sense there has to be something to catch your attention at the opening) and some language and some drug use. I also fall out with other reviewers who says the protagonist is anti Indian as regards culture and norms pertaining to women in Indian society. I'll say wtf just grow up buddies, feminist groups will thrash you the way you are thrashing the movie.
Overall, for a first time viewer, who has no idea that even original versions of the movie exist, and this is a remake....it will keep you entertained with a run time like a Hollywood movie....maybe it wont take long for you to forget the movie...and it wont be nominated for Oscars in foreign movie category...BUT one time watch is QUITE OK....give it a try....this THRILLER will keep you entertained for the entire run time.
