Just Give'R, indeed
25 May 2002
A great little bargain-bin film. The two leads are totally believable as your average clueless neighborhood headbangers. We've all known guys like this, and their dubious exploits resonate even as you double-up with laughter. Oh, to be able to join these clowns in turning off adult responsibility and "just give'r", if only for a moment.

Great improvisation based on a three-page story outline. With over 50 hours originally shot, I hope the film does well enough to allow a DVD with additional footage. I saw it opening night in Toronto with the theatre about 1/3 full.

For now, I'm off to get the soundtrack.

Amusing
30 April 2002
Unbeknownst to me I was dragged out to see this 'chick flick' but no harm done, in fact I had a smile on my face throughout. Sure, it looks like/sounds like a gals version of the American Pie films, but beneath the gags is a story about dating in the new millennium. Scary stuff? You bet.. and fairly well done, around a 6.5 out of 10. Great job by Applegate. Anyone else think that Thomas Jane resembles Christopher Lambert?

and The Band plays on
26 April 2002
I remember seeing bits and pieces of this film on late night TV many years ago, as a teenage beer-drinking house party was winding down. At the time I was a casual fan of The Band, but more a fan of that musical era.

I decided to see the re-released, re-mixed version on the big screen, even while mindful that the DVD was coming soon. And I'm glad I did, despite the fact that the theatre - the only one in town showing this limited release - was too small, with a poor sound system.

What a Band this was. I could do on and on about the skill of all these guys, but suffice to say that each member who is not Robbie Robertson was just as talented, if not more so, than Robbie Robertson.

Musical highlights: a majestic version of "The Weight" with the smooth Staples singers; Levon Helm 'Driving Dixie Down' with an emotional vocal performance; Bob Dylan, who I am not a fan of, reunited with his mates and clearly digging it.

Interview highlight: the late Rick Danko, at a loss for words when Scorcese asks what his post-Band future is like. The camera stays on Danko, who is clearly overcome, for a long period of uncomfortable silence.

Five stars
12 March 2002
This hilarious film strikes all the right chords and wields a mighty broom. Where to begin!

I believe the outrageous Canadianisms will be enjoyed by all, and will not necessarily fly over the heads of non-Canucks. If this film gets U.S. and international release, Paul Gross will be launched as a megastar; otherwise this will simply take a while longer. Regardless, his rise is inevitable.

The script is funny and and the mixture of comedy, romance and curling action works. The ensemble cast is remarkable and will likewise earn raves for their work. Leslie Nielsen is as funny as ever but will also surprise many as a somber dramatic actor: welcome back Leslie to your pre-Airplane! days, if only briefly.

The curling is well photographed and exciting, despite technical problems that had apparently plagued the shoot. This is a damned entertaining movie and considering that there are bazillions of non-curling-savvy humans out there, the choice of this ancient, honourable and nouveau-Olympic sport was brilliant. I can't say enough about the cast, who obviously had great material to work with. Even the antagonist U.S. "Juggernaut" team was great, with their skip another actor to watch out for. This is a rave, folks -- five stars. I'll see it again, and I can't wait for the DVD.. hopefully they'll have more outtakes like those shown during the closing credits.

Rock On, Paul Gross & Co.!
