Unbroken (2021)
Could have been better
The basic plot is that a pregnant detective is kidnapped and after 6 days comes to in a forest minus the baby. The 6 episodes are then all about finding out what happened to the baby.
Nothing wrong with the plot but the whole series is plodding and a lot of two-dimensional characters don't help. Nor do the usual clichés which seem inescapable in any modern police series. For example the parent with dementia, the gloomy filming where the sun never shines, and the central character who never changes their clothes or ever eats or drinks or sleeps.
The heroine is played by a fine actress but completely wasted on this dross. To make matters worse the actions of the perpetrator as revealed in the final episode make no sense. If you lost a child 30 years ago - and really wanted one - you'd have gone down the adoption route and not waited till you were in your 50's to abduct one.
What was really absurd was the idea that you could go around assaulting innocent people, even shooting one in the leg, and miraculously not be held to account.
Une chance sur six (2018)
Simply not believable
The oddest thing about this movie is that you watch it to the end despite it having a poor script, mediocre acting, and a plot that is hardly original. It's the sort of thing you might have seen in the Columbo series - only infinitely better written and acted.
The only thing I really know about the lead actor (and scriptwriter) Patrick Sébastien is that he used to present a cabaret show on French TV. On the evidence of this he should have stuck to the TV job.
The police inspector is supposedly very religious but behaves the whole way through as if he was completely amoral. He has a female assistant who for some reason has a shaved head and with whom he has the obligatory sexual relationship.
One of the characters gets convicted for a crime committed by another character but any half competent defence lawyer would have got him off.
Basically it's just rubbish and I think the reason you watch to the end is because you keep hoping it might improve. Vraiment déçu.
Hereditary (2018)
A very very bad film
The fundamental problem with this film is the lack of any coherent plot. It is also extremely slow in moving the action along - so slow that I resorted to fast forwarding the recording I was watching. It comes across as a mix n match of Tarkovsky, the Innocents and schlock horror movies. Also we have the cliche portrayal of male high school students as complete morons.
Is there anything good about this? The acting of the principal characters played by Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne started off OK as they dealt with the aftermath of the death of the former's mother but it soon descended into complete farce - maybe they realised that the plot had no credible ending and just gave up.
The final scene was just so mind-numbingly stupid that I guess the scriptwriter had given up as well.
