Black Mirror: Hang the DJ (2017)
Simple but powerful
I really really enjoyed this episode!!! It has to be one of my favourites of the Black Mirrors franchise, which I'm new to- but I've so far found a little disturbing due the series' ominous, dark undertones.
I was expecting the same in this episode, but it was the most beautiful surprise when they summited the wall only to be shown they have met this very fate 998 times- ultimately proving the app (which they were trying to override/escape) right in that they were indeed the perfect match!
As is the dark nature of the franchise, I was expecting the customary ominous, twisted plot-line at the end. This episode didn't stray too far from their predecessors' tradition in delivering the expected plot twist- however on this occasion, the lightness of the plot twist felt like a sweet release for the viewer, a happy ending at long last!!! .. & the message I received was that technology can actually work in your favour. There was room in the technology for human nuances, however the ultimate outcome can be statistically determined.. ie will this couple end up repeatedly attempting to escape the simulation, & once this criteria has been met hundreds of times- data confirms you are the perfect match.
A really touching story line & suggests that even in a technologically driven world- true love will always prevail.
Question though is: what about those that believed in the simulation & obeyed its rules out of fear of "banishment" ie the couple that got married & were championing the programme in their "wedding speech". Are they trapped in the simulation forever aka never experiencing real love- as in my observation, the episode suggests it is only those that attempt an escape almost 1000 times who are rewarded with their actual, true match/ aka one true love.
Swallow (2021)
Slow. Boring. Pointless
Sometimes I wonder what the aim of making movies like this is. Like, what are you supposed to get out of the movie? What is it supposed to deliver?? A film cannot satisfy an audience on cinematography alone. This movie lacked so much despite having so much potential, as narcotics is an area rarely traversed by Nollywood.
The premise of the film only presents itself 30 minutes before the film ends, and at over 2 hours long, it just highlights how much irrelevance there is in the story line. 80% of it was just pointless, unnecessary waffle. I lots all interest towards the end as I felt robbed of my 2+ hours that I invested in this movie.
I'm so disappointed in my guy Deyemi as I tend to gravitate towards his films because man is a dope actor. But I am beginning to realise he often takes on roles that do not stretch his artistic capabilities & skill in delivering roles with a depth that only he is capable of. Deyemi if the film does not allow you to showcase your talent to its full a la Kola- my friend, just don't accept the role.
Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke (2022)
Great potential but descended into a farce
Was wowed by this movie from the outset. Great cinematography, excellent costuming & an A list cast. But the movie quickly disintegrated into a laughing stock of a story line.
The plot began with great promise, get Chief Daddy's money back, but this never materialised into anything as the only plan to do so was to... make his son a huge super star??? They all ended up in Dubai which seemed to serve no purpose other than to bring an international element (& hype) to the film.
And the A list cast failed to deliver. In fact, there were too many of them! The film felt cluttered, overcasted with a rambling, incoherent plot line that had too many unnecessary parts & grew more & more ridiculous until we are finally given our release (the film drags on to the point of begging it to end) with a completely bonkers ending.
The only saving grace is that these are seasoned actors and combined with beautiful cinematography, great locations & a beautifully cladded cast, the movie just about manages to save itself from being one of the worst big budget films to be released from Nollywood this year or maybe ever.
