All Fun and Games (2023)
What a stinker!
This movie was awful! Laughably bad. It makes one wonder how it ever got produced and how it managed to even attract some, albeit c-list, stars. The plot revolves around a cursed knife from Salem? It possesses someone, then suddenly the ghosts are real, then they can be burned with light... I don't know, the film just makes stuff up as it goes along. It really felt like there was no script for much of it. And good lord, those quick loud jump cuts got really annoying. By the 100th one we were guessing when they'd come and mimicking the noise. Absolutely dreadful. Only plus is that it's just an hour and 15 minutes, but even at that length I was checking my watch.
Frasier (2023)
David Needs To Go
The character of David, Niles' son, is embarrassingly awful. They really need to cut him from the show. Have him go home to his parents in Seattle or better yet fall down an elevator shaft. An unfunny attempt to recreate Niles, but he's more like a bad parody of Niles with no personality of his own.
Whereas Martin's everyman-ness was endearing, Freddy just seems like an ungrateful jerk. And somehow smug, like he's better than his Dad. The concept of him is okay, but the actor doesn't have the skill to pull it off.
The two ladies are okay but no Roz or Daphne, and the Harvard professor is probably the best supporting character. But all are nothing special.
The 3 stars are for Grammer himself, who I still love as Frasier. I never expected they'd put together as great of a cast as OG Frasier (even side characters like Bulldog. Gil, Kenny and Noel were great!) but I'm stunned they couldn't find a better cast or more seasoned actors for Grammer to play off than this lot.
Margaux (2022)
Margaux is Fun!
So many people are complaining how bad this movie is. I really liked it!
So the kids are stock characters, so what! You need variety in a group or that'd be boring. Plus, they grew on me. Lexi, who I expected to hate since she's an influencer, winds up being one of the best characters with her sass. What winds up happening to her after surviving multiple attacks is hilarious.
But nothing tops Margaux (voiced by the real Siri lady). She has some great oneliners and putdowns.
While it is a little slow going at first, it really ramps up with twists and surprises. And some action and gore.
The only poor CGI is the robot arms that appear in a couple quick scenes. I smirked at them the first time, and that was that. I can overlook some dodgy FX in a lower budget film (that looked great production wise otherwise).
Yes, the AIs motivation is dumb, and a character tells it so. It's all in fun, so why take it seriously?
I would've ended the film a minute sooner though to end on a high.
