Species (1995)
2024 review- crazy how much has changed
I've been into 90s alien/horror lately and realized I'd never seen Species. Found it on Tubi. I thought it was pretty good! Solid casting and acting for what it is. Loved the pacing (never boring) and fun ending. More fiction than science but nothing wildly stupid or unbelievable- again, considering we're dealing with aliens. I noticed a lot of negative reviews from the late 90s to 2010s criticized the focus on sex and gore. My god how times have changed! If this was released today there would not be nearly so much fuss, especially the "gore." There was one particular shot in a sex scene that was risqué (and super hot) but I never once thought while watching it that the movie pushed the envelope with anything.
They Come Knocking (2015)
Decent camerawork, lighting, setting... but everything else.... Oh boy
Have you ever wanted to watch a movie where three characters scream the same five lines of dialogue to each other over and over and over and over again? Have you ever wanted to watch a movie where a widowed husband, an impossible teenage daughter, and painfully gullible younger sister are all so bafflingly stupid that they think that the visions of their dead mom, in a flowing white dress, levitating off the ground are actually real? Have you ever wanted to watch the story of a really creepy urban legend be executed so poorly you kept shouting at the screen? BECAUSE IF YOU DO, BOY DO I HAVE A TREAT FOR YOU!!!
The Killer (2023)
Beautiful! But unsatisfying.
Directing, cinematography, and music are all as exceptional as you would expect from this crew, and the acting is fantastic. The whole package is exciting and I couldn't wait for this. The story started off pretty solid. Strong development of the main character with an intruiging plot. But somewhere along the way, maybe you'd call it the start of the third act, it starts getting pretty dull, leading to a terribly unsatisfying conclusion that left me genuinely disappointed. I can't call it "boring." I never wanted to look away. I was hoping for something memorable or thought-provoking or chilling or something but it was just blah. What a shame.
They/Them (2022)
Cult classic?
This is a darkly hilarious and parody-like shlasher. I think it could become a queer horror cult-classic if people were ready to laugh at it and not take it so seriously. The actors are are really great, old and new, and there are plenty of decent death scenes. Like all the other positive reviewers note, I really don't understand all the hate and 1-Star reviews. What could you have possibly been expecting? I wonder if people were offended by some stereotypes but that's part of all scary movies and kinda part of rhe humor. I hope more people give this one an honest shot for what it is. You might be surprised.
House of Darkness (2022)
Crappy SFX
All the other reviews have covered the issues regarding the dragged-out dialogue (though Justin Long does a great job with what he's given) and snail-speed plot. So I went into this knowing I would have to suffer until the climax. That helped me enjoy it when I otherwise would've been frustrated. And even when I saw the ending coming a mile away, that still wasn't the biggest sin. This whole movie takes place in real-time, so you'd think they would spend every last penny (that they saved by having one location, minimal cast, and nothing but talk for the first hour) to ensure that the practical effects at the ending really sell it. However, It's so fake and cheesy that it completely ruins the tone. It is a shame, honestly. Better special effects could've saved this, but it just ends up looking ridiculous.
