Poor Things (2023)
Uggh, good but iffy on recommending
I almost gave up at about 30 minutes in- it's just so artsy, in b & w, lots of sex, graphic scenes. Kinda like a slow burn though - Bella Baxter's character played by Emma Stone goes through the full developmental growth worthy of an Oscar. The movie is 2.5 hours long and really did not start coming together for me until about the last 45 minutes and then it was quite remarkable. This movie is not for everyone- I can see why the Academy loves it. It should win for cinematography and costume design. I personally don't see it as best picture but then I rarely agree with the Academy. Emma Stone deserves the award and the writing for screenplay is excellent as well.
Still (2023)
Love Michael J Fox even more. Honest and inspiring.
Great chronological outline of MJF career starting when he dropped out of HS to become an actor. Documentary styled where MJF tells his own story in present time on camera and actors recreate his past. Michael's honesty and genuine on camera charisma has not changed, even though he struggles tremendously to speak and move.
A phenomenal story. To be diagnosed with this 'old person's' disease at the age of 29, had to come as a complete gut punch, especially at the height of his career. Michael J Fox is a champion who has never, and will never be still.
An added bonus is the musical soundtrack. It will take you back in time. I only wish it went longer than an hour and thirty seven minutes!
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Jesse Pinkman's story
I watched Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, then Breaking Bad again before I even remembered this movie. This is not a stand-alone, you must have watched Breaking Bad because there are flashbacks to the series and too many pieces for a new viewer to put together. The scene is set immediately where BB leaves off, with Jesse fleeing his prison in Todd's El Camino. I agree with others that it was a little hard at first to accept this was moments later, because mostly of the visible difference due to age and life to Todd- and this moves at a slower pace, esp. The first 40 minutes or so. But I love how Vince Gillian let's us see Aaron Paul's great acting ability- he isn't the 'whiny bitch' (Jesse's words!) that we met 5 years earlier. We see in detail what he went through-some unspeakable treatment. We see him be vulnerable, but also smart and tough. This was a gift for BB fans and I am grateful!
