1883: Lightning Yellow Hair (2022)
Written by a 16 y/o girl?
I began watching the show because it was created by Taylor Sheridan.
By episode 7, or whatever episode this is, I became convinced that though created by Taylor Sheridan, surely it was written by a 16 y/o girl.
The monologues are atrocious. The characters are mostly one dimensional. The central female character is inconsistent in her motivations, as well as being a slightly subdued "Mary Sue" - good at everything, and supposedly wise beyond her years to the surprise of all adults around her. These same adults, by the way, have stood across other men 20 yards away, shooting directly at one another (all civil war vets, etc.). The women have birthed (and lost) children the "old fashioned way" (no anesthesia, c-sections, etc.).
Wow, gosh, this girl is SUPER talented and tough. TOUGH, I tell you! So impressive! Yeah, heck, she might as well join us on this raid because she's been riding horses for a good two at three years now, and I showed her how to shoot for a minute, so she's all set. Go get 'em, girl.
Oh, and... the way she behaves is equivalent to how a modern, spoiled, western girl does, and yet nobody bats an eye. She cuts her dresses short, acts like a cowboy, screws the fleet, and nobody thinks this is odd behavior for the time? But by god, don't you dare say the F word in front of people. That'd be uncouth.
Her monologues - they're exactly what I'd expect out of a sixteen year old girl asked to "write something deep." Especially one who has never faced hardship beyond feeling pressure to decide whether or not she wants her Valencia soy macchiato frothed or not.
"Realism" - of course "yellow hair" has arm pit hair. "That's like... totes realistic and stuff." Oh but her skin is flawless, and her hair is always perfectly clean, conditioned, and straitened.
I've wasted too much time on this.
TL;DR - I suspect Taylor asked some random intern or assistant to write this show, and then he put his stamp of approval on it. A real disappointment.
Foyle's War: Killing Time (2010)
Typical American Production... "Must contain obligatory - Whites are evil, blacks are good and innocent victims."
I'm appalled by what Icon has done with this season, and especially this episode.
Sam doing nude art? Ummm, did they watch the previous seasons?! Her character wouldn't do that.
This episode is a carbon copy of at least one episode in every season of every show in America (I'm American, by the way). The production companies, writers or whoever ALWAYS put an episode in about how evil and racist whites are, and how resilient, forgiving, courageous, forward-thinking and morally superior the blacks are (no, I'm not going to call them African-Americans, just like I wouldn't refer to myself as a European America or a Native American or anything like that).
When many of us see TV/Movies like that, the credibility of the work takes a nosedive.
I absolutely LOVED the previous six seasons (five according to Netflix, but what do they know).
I moderately enjoyed the first episode of this season, but it was "off" in terms of its understanding of the main characters, as their portrayal was inconsistent with the previous seasons.
I HATED "Killing Time" due to the aforementioned cookie-cutter race-card crap, and now I'm afraid to watch the last episode.
I guess I'lll just have to pretend season seven never happened.
