Nancy Drew (2019)
What was Right and Wrong
The show itself was entertaining. For those curious, I watched all 4 seasons, beginning to end. I really liked the lead actress. As a show, I enjoyed it for what it was.
What it wasn't was a Nancy Drew series despite the name.
I never read the books but I really enjoyed the 70's series with Pamela Sue Martin. Sad this series never brought in the Hardy Boys but then again, that's a good thing since this series had nothing to do with the Nancy Drew character that was created almost a century ago.
The biggest problem I had with is whole series, that was unlike the original character is with this series, almost every mystery somehow is connected to Nancy. She was not really going out to solve mysteries that people brought to her or that she stumbled on to. Those were the things that hooked me onto the 70's series and from what I heard about the original books.
I get that people like to make changes, to update things. With the Hardy Boys series from the 70's, the Shaun Cassidy (yes, the teen-throb singer), played 1 of the Hardy Boys (Parker Stevenson played the other). In each show, Shaun's character always seemed to have a singing gig at the end, that his brother always missed. At least the singing part was never part of the mysteries, just a running gag.
I have yet to see a series or movie remake, in the past 30 years where there well-established character(s) are re-imagined from the original character, was successful or well received. I still don't understand why people do it unless their intent is to grab at an existing fan-base, just so they can see another version. How very narcissistic of them.
With all that said, this series was good, for what it was, a supernatural mystery show, not for what it wasn't, a show about an older Nancy Drew, that's what the 70's series was.
