Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Underrated film with a beautiful message
I think this film should get an average of 6.9/10 but I have to give it a couple of bonus points for ingenuity which make it 9/10. It had a beautiful non-Hollywood message at the end (which seems to be lost on deaf ears), tribute to the classic WW and the cryptic "how could wishing for things be harmful?" keeps one watching. The film got a 13+ rating for the violence. However, the "what if" plot, action stunts and cast of characters are more appropriately aimed at a family audience rather than at teenagers. Bear that in mind when watching the film and listening to the moral of the story. You can skip the two lengthy introductions (backdrop, then real intro) at the beginning.
The GOOD parts:
1) authentic details true to the comic books: Diana gets her invisible plane and later learns to fly.
2) characters are actually complex characters - flawed, but not totally evil - and their motivations and delusions are realistic. However, they have the capacity to evolve and see the wrongness of their ways. Their flaws are also reflected in the population at large who are complicit in contributing to a potential world war (an underappreciated/ under-analysed point in the real world).
3) the storyline, character arcs and small details come together nicely and naturally in the story. No antagonist dies at the end. WW does not kill anyone like she does in the first WW film.
4) beautiful message in the climax where WW makes her plea to the people of the world to renounce their wishes while the villain says, "why? It's my turn now!" The message is something as wise as Professor Jordan B. Peterson might say (and highly unusual for a Hollywood film). Message: You cannot have it all, accept the truth. The world is already beautiful. You must be the hero - only you can save the day. You are not the only one who has suffered, who doesn't want to be afraid anymore or alone or powerless. You are not the only one in the world who imagined the world different, better, a world where they were loved, appreciated and seen. But what is it costing you?
5) great acting by everyone. Ignore the cynics.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
Never again...
Confusing, muddled storyline and chain of events. Lots of fillers. Too many new characters that seemed to instantly be "old pals" with each other but no real chemistry between them. Real anti-climax with Credence story arc.
Babies (2020)
Shockingly bad
I was super interested in learning all about human development but this docuseries is a waste of time. Despite having snippets from scientists talking about their work, it is very unscientific. Perhaps it is the editing, or the bad scientists involved, but none of the conclusions make any sense. At the end, it stated that children who had more attentive parents who helped their kids more had smaller hippocampi (an area critical to learning), and those children who had less attentive parents had bigger hippocampi. The conclusion drawn was that we should give more attention to children because children are not spending time managing their stress, and this frees up the rest of the brain to explore. ?????
