Martyrs (2008)

A oh-so-good hellish and disturbing ride!
24 October 2021
Martyrs...damn this movie is raw, brutal and deep on so many levels. I think it tackles alot of issues like mental health/traumatization and religion possibly? The film pulls NO punches whatsoever and there are now images burned in my mind I'll probably never forget. The actors of Lucie and Anna are extremely great talented. Little fun fact, the actor of Anna broke three bones on set and was instructed to cry for 10+ hours on most days. It was such a hellish experience filming and they were put through so much stress during shooting of the movie they said they would never work with the director again. The gore is on another level and honestly gotta admire the effects team. Everything looked so real. If you do dare to watch, make sure you watch the original French version with subtitles. "Martyrs" has now become one of my top 3 favorite horror movies of all time.

Great horror with a tinge of Silent Hill
17 October 2021
This film is a masterpiece! I believe most of this is attributed from how hard I wanted to root for the main character to succeed. She's just so down on her luck from the very opening scenes and throughout the entirety of the movie basically. We've all been through some low points in life where nothing just seems to go right and given Amber's situation I felt more bad for her than any other protagonist in recent memory.

She's a very logical person as well, not falling into many of the typical horror movie tropes and the actor herself did a great job portraying so many different range of emotions. The movie has a tinge of Silent Hill treatment but without giving any spoilers, you will just have to watch and see what I mean by that.

One of my favorite movies of 2021
13 October 2021
I went into this movie blind, no trailers or any previous knowledge of it. After all was said and done, "Superhost" is now one of my favorite movies or 2021 and probably the best horror movie of the year

It does tension building SO well and is reminiscent of old school slasher films but made for the modern era of technology. Words can't describe how utterly amazing Gracie Gillam's performance is in this film. You just have to see it to appreciate it. Also there's limited cast of 4 people which I enjoyed the focus and attention each character received. Such a fun movie that I highly recommend, especially for spooky season.

Dear God...what did I just watch??
11 October 2021
I was just curious when I saw this movie on my Amazon list. Decided to give it a watch and instantly regretted it. The animated scenes are pretty cool if I'm being honest and I will give this one solidary point solely because the people who created this intentionally wanted to make a bad movie.

This is some of the worse acting and effects you will ever see. If you want to torture yourself or friends, pop this movie on and let the cringe fest and fast palming begin.

Very trippy and EXTREMELY bizarre gem of a movie
8 October 2021
Uzumaki is one of the strangest movies I've seen in recent memory. I remember seeing clips of it when I was a preteen and thought I was dreaming because the imagery was just so bizarre. Decades later after a full proper viewing, my thoughts haven't changed.

The plot of the film is already "out there" but when you add on the bizarre character acting, the bonkers imagery and constant green camera filter, it just seems like you've literally watched someone's crazy nightly dream. It's a very hard to describe feeling but I will say I did enjoy this movie at the end of the day. I love it when films are outside the box and not try to be so cookie cutter because seeing that constantly would be very boring.

As a sidenote, I wasn't aware until after my viewing, this movie was based on Junji Ito's manga series. I will be checking this out and reading in full as a personal goal for 2022.

Underwhelming overall but that 3rd story though!
8 October 2021
Big fan of the VHS series since the very first was released. Naturally I was ecstatic hearing about VHS 94. I left the movie feeling a very underwhelmed. Most of the short stories end just as things get really good and leave you with metaphorical "blue balls". The sewer story and third "Subject" story are worth the price of admission though. Words cannot describe how great "The Subject" tape was. It had a really good start that immediately immersed you into the situation. A high octane and riveting middle and a decently satisfying end. That story also took me on a rollercoaster of emotions as well that I can't get into details without spoilers.

VHS 94 was decent but could have been so much better if each segment utilitized it's alotted time better. I do highly recommend watching for any fans of the VHS series if only for the first and third stories.

A very lackluster finale
8 October 2021
Fear Street: 1666 is the weakest installment of the Fear Street saga. I do love the old timey setting however, it's instantly refined as the characters from part 1 are the main characters here. I get that Ruby is basically seeing first hand what happened to Sarah Fier but it could have been executed much better. They should have had a whole new cast much like they did in Fear Street 1978 and possibly had glimpses of Ruby in that story watching things unfold. It would have been immensely more enjoyable and not have taken me out of the movie so quickly.

Once they are back in the present, I didn't like the inclusion of the comedic character as he threw off the overrall vibes of the situation at hand. The way everything wraps up is also a bit messy and extremely confusing. Again, this is my least favorite of the trilogy but I still do appreciate the effort that went into making the three movies in general and connecting them all together pretty well.

Another camp slasher but executed well!
3 October 2021
I am particularly over camp slashers at this point, however, this installment of Fear Street was executed quite well and kept the brutality of the first one alive and well. Sadie Sink also made this great. I am really taking a liking to having her in all of these different horror ventures. Hopefully she continues on in the film genre.

1978 is run of the mill mostly but as I said, executed very well. It ties into the main storyline perfectly and I REALLY loved the way this one ended. Not as good as the first but still a great watch.

Surprisingly good and perfect for Halloween!
27 September 2021
I had heard alot about this movie/series from people around me but thought it was just going to be another generic slasher film. It is that but with so much more flare to it. All of the actors did a great job in their roles and I really loved the different killers that pursued them.

For most part of the movie, I thought it was good but not GREAT but by the final act, I was giving this film alot more praise. It made some decisions with some of the characters that I felt most people wouldnt like but unpredictability always makes for the best movies. Can't go into too much detail without spoiling.

I like the 90's vibe of this one but I am skeptical watching the other two installments since it seems to be going further back in time. I had my fill of old time slasher horror when I watched American Horror Story: 1984 but we'll see how this plays out.

As for Fear Street 1994, I highly recommend watching for any horror fan, especially in the month of October to get you into those spooky vibes.

Malignant is off the friggin wall crazy!
13 September 2021
I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this movie. I had only seen one 30 second trailer of it and left it at that. Also it was a film by James Wan so based off his recent movies, I wasn't expecting much at all. Boy, was I wrong.

Malignant starts out pretty standard but gets INSANELY unpredictable and literally crazy in the third act. I did NOT see that twist coming. Outside of some slightly tropy parts and somewhat laughable scenes, this is an amazing horror movie that I highly recommend!

Very cool 80's vampire flick!
7 September 2021
I remembered this movie being much darker and scarier as a kid but rewatching in my adult years, not so much. It was still a great throwback to the 80's era. I think the movie captured what it was like to be a teen living during that time and wanting to fit in with the "cool" crowd. The soundtrack that plays throughout the movie is very nice and I loved the vampire FX on all the characters. It still is very cheesy in some parts but that's part of that 80's charm that can be overlooked. Overrall, I enjoyed the movie but definitely not worth all the crazy hype in my opinion.

Mac and Me (1988)

This movie is a gem!!!
19 August 2021
First, I watched this movie by way of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 so that alone and them picking out the funny bits as the movie was playing was simply hilarious!

As a movie by itself, yes, it's a ripoff of E. T. for sure but it's one of those movies that are so bad that it's good/funny/nostalgic. Not taking it seriously, I believe alot of people who haven't seen this yet would have a good time. The acting and alien designs alone are funny as all get-out. I oddly recommend seeing Mac N Me if only for the laughs.

MUCH better than the first!
19 August 2021
"The Suicide Squad" was much better than the first. Characters are fleshed out better, the story is much more cohesive and there is gore that definately was missing from the previous film. James Gunn has a vision and he executes it damn near flawlessly.

Idris Elba did a much better job than Will Smith as the leading character and this is coming from someone who isn't that much of an Elba fan. You tend to fall in love with all of the characters as they all have their own motives for what they do. I feel like Harley didn't get as much shine in this one as she's had a solo movie and the first suicide squad practically revolved around her.

My only gripes are that, there are a few scenes of animal violence that could have been left out as they were unnecessary. My gf who is an animal lover was thankfully out of the room during that time or else she would have stopped watching right then and there. I also would have preferred the "smart intellectual" version of King Shark from the Harley Quinn animated show. I think he could have been an even bigger icon and had much funnier and witty conversations with his crew rather than being only able to utter a few words at a time.

All in all, I highly recommend this movie if your looking for a good popcorn action filled time. Much better than the first and everyone involved from cast to behind the scenes did an amazing job.

Very disturbing but necessary depiction of human evilness
3 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie once when I was 12 or 13 and some of the graphic scenes stayed burned in my mind into my now, early 30's. I recently was able to acquire a physical copy a few weeks ago and decided to give my more adult mind a second watch of this film. It is STILL as disturbing and gruesome as I remember.

Back then, I also didnt know this movie was based off real life events which made my stomach sink even further. The Brandon Teena story is truly one of epically sad proportions.

The film accurately depicts Brandon Teena and all the events that lead to her murder along with two others. Mr. Devine, the third murdered, was not mentioned in the movie for whatever reason but still everything hits you very hard. The sad fact is that this WAS the reality back in those times. No one understood what it meant to be transgender or anything outside the norm. This of course led to hate crimes but the Brandon Teena case just hits extra hard given how lively and bright spirited he was and how horrifically aweful his final days were. Not to mention the other victims who just were in the wrong place at the wrong time and lost their lives as well. All in front of a toddler who thankfully was spared.

Hilary Swank does justice and a half to Brandon Teena. This story is one that needed to be shared to bring attention to this topic on a national level as dreadful as it is. Hard to critique a movie like this given the factual events that occurred but I highly reccommend the watch. It is a rollercoaster tension filled display but one that will have you reflecting on your self by the end.

Be yourself and also respect others no matter their differences. In the end, we are all human beings.

Gory mixed bag of good and bad
31 July 2021
Big fan of Joel McHale but this movie is a mixed bag of good and bad. I loved the cinematography and gore, however the plot is rather, "dumb," for lack of better words. There really isn't even a good payoff in the end either which put even more of a sour taste in my mouth.

I also am one for suspending my beliefs for the sake of a movie but I can't believe Becky can do the things she does in this movie to the antagonists who are literally hardened escaped prisoners. I am also not a fan of animal cruelty and there are some unneccesary scenes that could have been left out of the movie as they didnt serve much to the plot overrall or render any sort of significance to the movie in the slightest.

I didnt hate the movie but I didnt fully enjoy it either. If it does get approved for a second installment, I might be interested to see where this all leads though.....hopefully the payoff that should have happened in this movie.

Space Jam New Legacy is NOT a complete dumpster fire
18 July 2021
I'm going against the grain here in saying Space Jam: New Legacy was NOT a complete dumpster fire of a movie. It's more of a matter of perspective. Most people reviewing this movie now were under the age of 10 when the original came out in 1996 including me. That movie was a classic and remained in our minds as a cherished memory. As it should because it brought Looney Toons, which were still relatively popular at the time, and Michael Jordan who was a literal basketball legend known world wide, together in formula that was fail-proof. I feel most people already had a stigma coming into this film whether their personal dislike of Lebron, uninterest in the old school Looney Toons characters, or just not willing to like this movie because the original is the one we hold close to our hearts.

I personally started enjoying the movie once the toons were introduced. Before that point, it was borderline unwatchable. You have to remember overrall, this is a movie geared towards kids of that age group in today's world. You can't take every movie so seriously.

Yes, Lebron's acting sucked but so did Michael Jordan's in the original. The film IS a bit all over the place but sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy a movie for what it is. If you go into it with that outlook, you might not have that horrible of a time.

Loki is a very slow burn show with high impact to the MCU
18 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Loki is a very slow burn of a show through and through. By the end of it, you can see why. It seemed like it was a big exposition dump to introduce Kang the Conqueror into the MCU without wasting a entire movie for that purpose. This, in hindsight, is actually pretty genius in my opinion. The show overall is very slow as mentioned but I did enjoy the ride while I was on it. I do think if you aren't heavy into the MCU or a dedicated fan of the comics, you might be a bit bored with this Marvel production.

Black Widow (2021)

A great sendoff for Scarlett's Black Widow
18 July 2021
"Black Widow" is an amazing rollercoaster of a film that delivers on fronts the MCU had never seen before! Scarlett Johansson was well overdue for her own movie being one of the original Avengers. It is just unfortunate that it comes after her death in "Endgame" but as I said, this movie knocks it out of the park with its action scenes, emotional drama and also sets up for future MCU implications. The core cast all did amazing work! Most notable is Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Her character has grown to be a hardened assassin from childhood who you think would be very dry but Pugh still manages to have amazing personality and surprisingly great comedic timing. Johansson serves as a great driver of the film and foil to Pugh's assist which makes for a very fun dynamic duo. The film is overrall great and exactly the epic adventure we all needed to drive everyone back to the theatre. This is an experience that should be seen on the big screen for sure even though it is offered through the Disney+ app as premiere access. If you want a spy movie that adds that patented MCU flair, I highly suggest going out to see "Black Widow"

Kill Bill with guns!!
18 July 2021
This movie is "Kill Bill" with guns and I love it! The dialogue, gory action scenes, and even a bit of the cinematography reminds me alot of Quentin Tarantino. Karen Gillan does a pretty decent job as leading lady in this crime filled adventure but she does lack a certain "edge" that is typically needed for this style of movie. I still had a really enjoyable time watching this.
