And Just Like That... (2021)
It Ruined the Original Series
As a hardcore fan I felt so betrayed that they ruined SATC in just 2 episodes of this. It was so wrong on so many levels I don't even know here to begin.
Let's begin with Carrie. To reduce her into a podcaster who has to subject herself to please a millennial, woke podcaster boss is beyond me. Carrie was in a league of her own. She was not the type to join this podcast bandwagon. She was a non-conformist, one of New York's movers and shakers during her hey days. It made more sense that she would have built her own empire by now, or at the very least become an editor at Vogue. And not demote her at this level.
Miranda was a formidable lawyer, she embodied women empowerment in the workplace and all of a sudden she is reduced to a PC-blundering white woman... it's disgusting. And Charlotte....also no evolution/character development she has just become a literal full-blown Upper East Side Karen.
Also nobody needed to see Steve being deaf, nobody needed to see Big die, and nobody needed to see Brady have sex just because nobody can do what Samantha did in the show anymore.
The series should have been left alone. And that comes from a hardcore fan such as myself who has literally gone to NY and do SATC tours, have all the books, and has re-watched the series a million times.
For a show that was smart, sassy, and sexy, they somehow managed to make it stupid and shallow beyond repair. What a shame.
Mulan (2020)
If it ain't broke...
The animated original version was perfect in every way. There was absolutely no reason to have revised it! Mulan had one of the best original music and to just simply remove it knowing that fans loved it was an insult. I really hope Disney learns their lesson from this and do not commit the same mistakes for future live action remakes like Little Mermaid and Hercules.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Missed Opportunities
As a person of South East Asian roots, I wanted to love this. But it had some very glaring issues:
1. A South East Asian movie with the leads predominantly voiced by EAST ASIAN actors like Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, and Sandra Oh is a bit offensive when there are a whole lot of South East Asian actors that could have voiced these characters. Not that I have anything against these actresses, I admire them but it is misleading to champion the first South East Asian Disney movie when it is only that on the surface.
2. Raya not having the usual grandiose Disney Princess treatmeants like killer songs and overall look breed of stereotyping us as a people. Which is unfortunate seeing as Lea Salonga, of South East Asian roots have been singing Disney songs for years. And here we finally had our own movie and somehow we didn't deserve all the bells and whistles.
3. Seing as Disney movies have a knack for being so wonderful that you can't help watching it over and over again, surprisingly this is the one and only Disney movie that wasn't watched in our house for more than once which is ironic since as South East Asians we are the target market supposedly. And the re-watch factor just isn't there.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
One of the top 3!
Definitely one of the top 3 MCU films thus far. Right up there with Avenegers. And easily the best movie to come out of 2021. It has a quality to it that is hard to explain unless you see it for yourself and even if you are not necessarily a Marvel fan or if you are feeling that "Superhero movie fatigue", this has a more universal appeal that transcends that realm.
Cinderella (2021)
Good fun with helpful lessons
Not all movies need to be deep. This is a silly good-natured fun movie and anyone who wants to lighten up a little during these times will appreciate.
A lot of criticism about being "woke" and girl-boss themes but when you are actually a parent of a 15-year old girl, and you want to give lessons about focusing on school vs boys, but you know you can't tell her that directly without having any form of possible negative impacts, having a movie like this with Cabello as a role model is INVALUABLE. I don't expect these negative reviewers to understand something as important as that but there you go. It has a clear audience maybe you are not one of them but if you're just looking for something fun and or something that your kids can learn from, there's a definite audience who will appreciate this.
