I set about watching this flick very consciously and carefully as never have I expected that much backlash from the public about understandable concerns of the situation with the selection of the main character. In fact, this movie has tantalising moments and some sort of showmanship. However, in comparison with the original film, it is undeniably less compelling. I do realise that certain comparison of these two stories is already seen as seedy and tacky.
But, the visual effects are remarkably splendid as well as costumes. To be fair, this movie was rather atmospheric and engrossing to certain extent.
I definitely can't help but agree that the casting crew could have found a better actor for Prince Eric. I don't mean to be crass, but Jonah Hauer King is a total miscast. I still can't figure out why he had such a wacky face expression as if he had sinusitis and was about to blow his nose all the time.
The way Awkwafina voiceovers Scuttle was quite impressive. I'm convinced that the original movie has all the well-deserved positive appraisal and acclaims, and every single one has already extolled it. But the truth is the present-day movie industry endeavours to do its best to revive a supposedly long-forgotten masterpieces of the past which are indeed still strongly imbedded in our minds. And the thing is they don't need to be improved or altered by any means.
Even though there have been ample attempts to draw attention to minority groups, these deliberate, and in some cases desperate, efforts will undoubtedly incur significant costs in the long run, which are clearly recognised even now. Nevertheless, I don't intend to rebuke or reprimand the crew involved in this movie-making process. Just a quick reminder that such purposeful obtrusion could be jarring and.disingenuous for someone.
