Caroline (2018)
A film worth watching
Inside a car with no air conditioning on a blazing summer's day in Texas. Certainly not a safe or comfortable environment for anyone, let alone three young children. "Caroline" is a realistic but heartbreaking film with no winners, focused on the experience of Caroline and her two younger siblings as their mother leaves them waiting in a car while she goes in for a much needed job interview. Pair of directors, Logan George and Celine Held, based this film on several news stories of similar events, resulting in a powerful and emotionally resonant piece that has viewers on the edge of their seat as they watch the tension rise and the situation escalate.
This film has masterfully developed the struggles and desperation of the mother by setting up criticism for the society that put her in that position. The audience is both sympathetic towards the characters and fearful of the consequences they could face. The eruption of loud sounds, accompanied by the presentation of this film from the perspective of a child, makes Caroline's subsequent loss of innocence all the more stressful and heartbreaking, and the abrupt ending leaves the audience with unresolved emotions, reeling from what just took place. The short ending is the only polarizing aspect of the film, but it is overall an amazing piece of work that humanizes real-life stories that we tend to feel detached from.
