Trolls Band Together (2023)
Not sure of who the audience is here
Just saw this with my kids and we all thought it was ok. I think the one huge thing that they overlooked is that kids do not care about old boybands at all, so all of the references went over their head and the story itself was kind of forgettable. At the end, Branch out if the blue reveals that he was with a boyband other than his brothers and the *NSYNC trolls appear to sing a song. While the adults obviously got it, my kids were confused by an ending where Branch suddenly had a different band for no reason at all.
If this was meant to entertain adults, the lame sexual innuendos and drug references just felt lazy and forced. It was more offensive that they think this is how we're entertained than the fact that it was in a kids movie. Just completely unnecessary.
Overall, it just lacked the charm that the first one had. It didn't have a strong story and no real message other than having siblings is great if you magically have the same personality like Poppy and her conveniently new found sister.
Not completely terrible, but as my kids would say, "This is a total cash grab."
Clifford (1994)
Still absolutely terrible
I saw this when it first came out and thought that it was the most obnoxious thing I've ever seen. If you don't like Martin Short's typical schtick, you will hate this movie so much. The whole time I felt like I was being assaulted by a Martin Short vanity project. I vowed to never watch it again.
That was until tonight, when my son asked if we could watch this. I gave in. One thing I will say all these years later is that Charles Grodin is a national treasure. He seemed genuinely annoyed and like he wanted to kill Clifford. He was all in and that part was delightful. He deserved an Oscar for putting that much into this disaster.
The Muppets Mayhem (2023)
Something for everyone!
We were looking for something to watch as a family of 5, and chose this even though there were a couple of us who aren't the biggest Muppets fans (and we've seen them all!) The Mayhem won us all over though. As mentioned by many, this has heart, nostalgia, and humor. We found ourselves laughing at loud at different parts. After recent disappointments involving the main characters (especially that terrible Kermit voice) it's refreshing to focus on just the Mayhem. Plus, the more Animal the better! The human characters are likable as well. There are also cameos that both kids and parents will appreciate. Just good family fun!
Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021)
Disappointing
I was really looking forward to this....but I have to say I was so incredibly bored. The writing was predictable, which is to be expected with The Muppets, but it was lacking the charm that usually makes that okay. There were a lot of celebrity cameos, but they weren't even that interesting. Honestly, I was most excited to see Pat Sajak, just because it was so random and woke me up for a second. I always enjoy Will Arnett, but it felt like they thought the humor you get from his Will Arnettness would be enough to carry this special. It just felt tired.
The absolute worst part was Kermit's voice! I really couldn't get over it. Sooo many people can do a better Kermit. I don't even know how they make a muppet movie thinking that a bad impression is okay. Seriously, the next time you do this, hold a YouTube contest or something to find a new Kermit. I guarantee you can do better.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
They phoned it in
This was pretty close to the same story as Trolls World Tour, which was also predictable and boring. At least that one had some music for entertainment.
