Amélie (2001)
fantastique
26 November 2001
A shy young girl finds a way to express here joi de vivre in the traditional French cinematography of the common people. The cinematography is very well done and it evokes all it is supposed to with a beautiful and charming Audrey Tautou even more cute than a young Juliette Binoche. Somehow I find the film less than satisfying, however.

I am at a different point in my life maybe than older coming to terms with my mortality people, but it seems to be the running theme in many french films, a long stretch for someone who grew up on the pain of humanity in Scorcese and Coppola. It seems like Amelie sacrifices her own capabilities to live the simple life as a waitress who finds love around the corner with the photo geek. The only character who has seen any of the world seems to be the garden gnome. A well, I guess I am a sucker for a hard luck story and I take the happy endings with a little too much pessimism. Anyway, I thought it was a nice change for Jeunet, showing his diverse talent.

Very good film about troubled VT lives.

A touching independent film from Vermont. Strong film technique by Jacobson. The connection between mother and daughter is touching, but the supporting plot and dialogue is sometimes lacking. References to the Nearings, Whitman, and Frost seem obvious. Stoical lifestyles are portrayed with candor and honesty. Fantastic performance by Rusty Dewees (as always).
