The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Amazing premise - terrible ending
I personally love dark movies - I love the film where the main character dies at the end, for the unexpected shock factor.
This movie sets a very low-n-slow premise: two characters, on one island, in one time, with no disturbances. I liked that; a movie all about dialogue and depth of character. And through the movie it keeps strongly enforcing a potential hit movie.
However, the ending is awful, with no satisfactory resolutions to any of the plot lines. Sadly, it reveals the fact that the writers had no end in mind.
The movie has beautiful cinematography, fantastic editing, and an unsatisfactory ending; making it a solid 5 in my book.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Please sell the rights to HBO already
Great graphics, no tension. Chop a hand off and the person doesn't even say ouch? I know it's Disney but at least make it watchable for adults. The people who grew up with the films are now ashamed of the saga.
Julia (2021)
A show about a beautiful personality ruined by the producers politics
I love Julia. Everyone loves Julia.
It's too bad that the director made it a political piece for today, when Julia was not trying to make a political stand for the year 2021. All she wanted was to inspire cooks 1912-2004. Please let cooking be about food, not politics.
Dopesick (2021)
Great writing and acting, poor production
The acting by big names and smaller talent is phenomenal, the writing is very good, and the subject is not only extremely relevant due to the current opioid crisis but also very interesting. Unfortunately, the series is ruined by the poor decision of jumping back and forth in the timeline made by the director and producers. Most of the time jumps are either distracting, confusing or absolutely unnecessary.
Dune (2021)
Piece of garbage without Hans Zimmer
The music is the only barely redeeming quality of this movie. The directing is absolutely disgraceful to the "dune" of the recent Star Wars movies. The rise of the skywalker was a cinematic gem compared to this anomaly. Also, Zendaya was in 5 scenes, so I feel bad for you if you watched the movie because of the trailer.
The Green Knight (2021)
The real curse is watching the movie to the end.
Spoiler alert: It's a waste of your time!
Now to the meat of the review:
It's a waste of your time. The $20 is nothing compared to 2 hours lost.
Pros: Beautifully and sometimes even ambitiously filmed. The cinematography is top notch and color grading is beautiful. The sets were immaculate.
Cons: The movie sucks. Absolutely dreadful. The gorgeous scenes make the utter lack of storytelling and decent taste even worse. If only they had shown the movie to a single friend before releasing it I could've been spared of this tragedy. The first 10 min is interesting. Minutes 10-30 you can skip. Then there's a random 1917-esque three minute horse riding scene out of nowhere that you should watch because it's absolute nonsense. The middle doesn't make sense and the ending is worse.
Summary: You want to believe in the good in this world. Likewise, and with its at times stunning visuals, you want to believe the director is taking you on a journey equivalent to the greatest allegories of all time. Pilgrims Progress 2.0. But, it's nothing more than your drunk buddy telling an uninteresting story that has no punchline.
